I am a recent graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where I obtained my B.S. in Actuarial Science and a minor in Econometrics. I also most recently obtained my M.S. in Predictive Analytics and Risk Management. My academic background has given me extensive training in mathematics, including subjects like algebra, calculus, statistics, linear algebra, and machine learning. Throughout my time in school, I completed many advanced quantitative courses while maintaining a 3.7 GPA. I also presented several academic papers, which strengthened my ability to take complex ideas and break them down into smaller, more understandable parts. Through these presentations, I realized that I really enjoy communicating ideas and technical concepts to an audience. I find that when I am engaged and energized, it helps create an effective learning experience for the audience as well.
To that end, I believe students learn best when the person teaching is genuinely engaged with the subject. My goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and repeating problems until proficiency is reached.
In addition to my math background, I also have prior tutoring experience from high school, where for one year I worked in my school's "Write Place" tutoring students one-on-one during scheduled sessions on English assignments and essays. I helped students develop thesis statements, find supportive evidence for ideas, correct grammar, and provide overall feedback to strengthen their work. While that experience was focused on writing rather than math, it taught me how to effectively communicate the reasons for making textual changes, patience, and individualized guidance.
I currently offer tutoring in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Calculus 1.
