I recently graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s degree in English with Secondary Education licensure. I am also completing my ESL endorsement. Relevant coursework includes Advanced Essay Composition, Fundamentals of English Grammar, Theory and Research in Written Composition, Content Area Literacy Instruction, Introduction to Teaching Multilingual Learners, and Applied Linguistics for Teachers of Multilingual Learners.
During my student teaching experience at St. Charles East High School, I worked with two co-taught English 9 multilingual learner classes, one solo English 9 class, and a Senior Creative Writing course. I supported students with essay writing, literary analysis, reading comprehension, grammar, organization, class discussions, and individualized feedback. Working with students at different skill and confidence levels strengthened my ability to explain concepts clearly and adjust support based on individual student needs.
My tutoring approach is structured, supportive, and focused on helping students build confidence over time. During sessions, I help students work through assignments step-by-step. Depending on the student’s needs, this may include brainstorming essay ideas, organizing paragraphs, reviewing grammar and sentence structure, practicing reading comprehension strategies, or helping students better understand literary analysis.
I understand that many students feel overwhelmed or discouraged in English classes, especially if they struggle with writing or confidence. My goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions while still being challenged to grow academically and become more independent learners.
