My first experience tutoring was in high school when I worked as a Geometry teacher’s assistant (TA). I was determined to help students improve their critical thinking skills, guide them through the course, and show them the joy within learning math. There was one instance during my first year as a TA when I helped a student who was struggling to understand the material. I took it step by step and guided her through various practice problems to improve her understanding and confidence, which ultimately helped her succeed on her exam. Experiences like this have led me to recognize how much I enjoy tutoring and helping students fulfill their goals.
Wanting to continue teaching others in college, I began tutoring at our campus academic success center, where I work with students taking General Chemistry and Biochemistry. As a pre-medical student, I have a strong background in core science subjects that has been further solidified through the successful completion of the MCAT, research projects, and academic activities. I enjoy tutoring as it gives me the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and use my previous experiences and knowledge to guide others in the direction of success. Most importantly, it allows me to understand unique approaches students take towards the subject and provide individualized support based on their specific goals and objectives. Based on my experiences, I find it most effective to discuss conceptual topics and test students’ understanding and application skills using practice problems provided by their respective professors. I look forward to leveraging these experiences to foster leadership, communication, and curiosity as a Wyzant tutor.
