I am currently in the middle of my undergraduate degree in Music Performance in jazz Studies at Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL). Hello! My name is Christian Y. I currently am a performing musician, educator, and college student in the Chicagoland area. I am currently in the middle of my undergraduate degree in Music Performance in jazz Studies at Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL). As a up-and-coming performer and a music student, I am deeply involved in music and desire to connect the two passions of my life --- people and music. Being surrounded by a great community of mentors and fellow students and musicians both at school and one the music scene here in the Chicagoland area has allowed me to build relationships, grow my skills as both a performer and educator, and honor the tradition of performance and education that has been set before me.

With a diverse background musically and culturally, I try to bring a unique perspective to music making and collaborating. I believe that I can learn something from everyone. I find joy when I learn new things and when I help others discover new things. I currently and have studied with world class musicians such as Reginald Thomas, Marianne Kim, Aimee Nolte, Tom Garling, Richard Johnson, Dr. Jeong-Soo Kim, and Dr. David Maki. Whether it is piano performance, Hammond organ, composition, or music industry mentorship, I am very blessed to learn from many of these individuals. They have all taught me how to teach well by their example.

Currently, I teach at Solo Classic (Buffalo Grove, IL), The Northern Illinois University Community School for the Arts (DeKalb, IL), and the Music Connection (Sycamore, IL). Having taught for a year, I feel very equipped to work with students on music and help guide them through musical and life challenges. As many say, music is a reflection of life. I want to make sure that the musicians I work with learn and are equipped with the tools to become amazing musicians and human beings.

I ensure that I am a present educator and someone that parents and students can trust. Ultimately, I love people and music. Teaching allows me to combine those two loves.

As a jazz musician with perfect pitch, my ear is excellent. I have passed many of my theory and aural skills with flying colors. I tutor and work with all of my students in ear training, regardless of musical discipline.

I have passed all my undergraduate theory and aural skills classes with flying colors (GPA: 3.8). With a background in keyboard performance and choral experience, I have experience sight-singing and sight-reading for many years. With experience both in school and churches, as well as working with professional vocalists and instrumentalists, sight-reading and sight-singing are things I have had to practice in the field.

Inspiring Teaching Style

Christian is teaching me a holistic method to learn jazz improvisation. I studied classical piano as a youth from age 10-15 and have explored jazz with jazz teachers on an off as adult. My intention with taking lessons this time around is to develop my ability to improvise with ease. On top of the expectation of scales, arpeggios and other exercises as a foundation, Christian layers in listening to the classics, singing to the melody of a jazz instrumental in a bee bop fashion and researching a tune thoroughly before getting started in "a-tune-week" teaching style. We have only had our first lesson, but I am I so impressed with his energy and enthusiasm, and am looking forward to learning from him.
