About Hannah

Hey, there! I'm a sophomore university student taking a break in order to pay for tuition. I'm a Linguistics major with a minor in TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages). For one year, I volunteered at the BYU English Language Center (ELC), and have helped many international students at the school in their endeavors to learn English. I have also tutored several students for the TOEFL test, and am familiar with the format and the needs of TOEFL students. Although all of my past tutoring has been voluntary, I have a lot of experience and have had success with all of my students. I am fun, quirky, and inventive with my teaching methods.

I am also currently studying Korean, and have studied with many Korean students through language exchanges, and would love to work with any interested native-Korean speakers. However, I am open to all languages and nationalities, and will gladly teach anyone who asks!

As for High School English, I am highly proficient in writing and literature. I received a 34 on the English ACT and a 32 on the Reading ACT. I love literature and writing! I have taken multiple creative writing classes. I was top of my class in English in High School. I would gladly teach anyone who is struggling, and help them appreciate English. :) I promise I won't make it boring!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I received a 34 on the ACT English section. I can teach strategy and tutor vocabulary and grammar.

ACT Reading

I received a 32 on the ACT Reading Section. I can tutor timed test strategies, as well as comprehension.

English

I was top of my class in English. I can tutor in literature, reading, grammar, vocabulary, and any other English related issues a student may have.

ESL/ESOL

I'm majoring in Linguistics with a minor in TESOL. I have significant experience in working with international English Language students. I have volunteered at the BYU English Language Center for a year, and I have worked with multiple students who are taking English language classes and who are studying for the TOEFL, Michigan, and other English proficiency tests. If needed, I can provide references.

Grammar

I have taken university courses in English Language and Linguistics, which give me a unique understanding of the mechanics of grammar.

Literature

I am most familiar with 18th and 19th century literature. I have studied poetry, essays, novels, and drama. I competed in literature contests, and won many awards for my knowledge of literature. I can tutor students in literature terms, analysis, and style.

Proofreading

I often proofread the essays of fellow students and have received great reviews. I always try to provide helpful feedback and explanations for my changes.

Reading

I can tutor students to help them with speed reading, analysis, and basic understanding of themes and main ideas.

SAT Reading

As timing is the main challenge of the ACT and SAT, I can help students increase their reading speed and learn how to pick out main ideas and scan.

TOEFL

I have helped many students prepare for the TOEFL Test, particularly the speaking and writing sections. I am familiar with the format. I will help students with speed, linguistics, and proficiency, and practice testing strategies.

Vocabulary

I will help students with vocabulary memorization, context reading, and root identification (recognizing word roots to find the definition of a word).

Writing

I can help students with writing techniques and styles. Creative writing, essay, and professional writing are all accepted.
