About Joy

Bio

Since I'm a former college math professor, you might expect that I always liked math. However, my passion for mathematics actually began when I was in 11th grade. As a homeschooled student, I had a flexible schedule which allowed me to take Algebra II at my local community college. I had an amazing professor who made me realize how fun math is. Since I'm a former college math professor, you might expect that I always liked math. However, my passion for mathematics actually began when I was in 11th grade. As a homeschooled student, I had a flexible schedule which allowed me to take Algebra II at my local community college. I had an amazing professor who made me realize how fun math is. After that, I decided to major in math. In May 2012, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my Bachelor's in Mathematics. For the next two years, I tutored math at the community college. I realized that I enjoyed sharing my passion for math with others and decided to get my Master's in Mathematics at California State University Fullerton so I could teach at community colleges. While working on my Master's I taught Intermediate Algebra and College Algebra at CSUF. I completed my Master's in the Summer of 2016 and taught at community colleges through 2020. I have taught Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Geometry, Precalculus, College Algebra, and Statistics. I love coming up with new ways of explaining things and watching my students have "lightbulb moments" when they suddenly understand a concept that confused them. I am very patient with my students and love it when they ask lots of questions!

I've taught math at the college level so I know how to give students a solid foundation in Algebra I to prepare them for more advanced math classes. As a tutor, my students liked that I was patient and that I had multiple ways of explaining the same concept. I have also edited an Algebra I textbook, which has made me even more familiar with different algebraic concepts and methods of explaining them.

Outstanding! Excellent! Smart! Great teacher!

We are so grateful that our daughter was tutored by Joy this semester. She was barely passing pre-calculus when she began working with Joy and is now earning an A. Joy presented the instruction in such a way that our daughter really understood the concepts. Joy is a smart and talented teacher. Our daughter has ADD so her instruction required additional strategies to keep her focused during tutoring. We were easily able to set up times to meet with Joy.
