I’m Nicolas. I am a student at the University of Utah with two years of college experience. During college, I have been able to earn a spot on the Dean’s List at Utah Tech University by maintaining a 4.0 GPA while taking 20 credit hours per semester. I’ve since transferred to the University of Utah for my junior year of college.

Additionally, I have had the experience of going through the US Army’s Combat Medic program through the National Guard. During my basic training, I was the distinguished honor graduate of my company. And during the combat medic course, I excelled among my peers, with one of the highest GPAs in my company. Here I earned my EMT certification and my combat medic certificate by passing all written tests and by demonstrating competency in all practical skills validations.

As a tutor, I specialize in the fields of biology and anatomy & physiology, as well as writing and history. My experience is primarily informal, as I have helped my peers in college and in the Combat Medic course to better understand the subject matter. My methodology is to teach fundamental principles that will give my students a deep understanding of the subject matter. I have found this to be far more productive than simply memorizing the information you expect to see on a test. With this method, I was able to help many of my peers in the combat medic course to succeed.

For example, I was able to do this by helping my peers to understand how body systems worked, which helped them to understand why certain medical interventions would be indicated in a given scenario. Another way I was able to help my peers in this course was by helping to familiarize them with medical terms by explaining the word roots and helping them see the connections between med terms and everyday words. Connecting new concepts with what's familiar to my students is another key to my teaching philosophy.
