Hello there, it's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Crys, and I am a wildlife ecologist with a bachelor's degree in biology, with an emphasis on ecology, academic research in mycology (mushrooms and fungi), and personal and professional experience in ornithology (birds). My diverse background comes from a year-long study of global wildlife conservation throughout six different countries, in addition to various jobs working as a wildlife biologist in Iceland and Hawai'i. My expertise is in biology and ecology, yet I have experience in writing and entry-level Spanish comprehension.
In college, I worked as a writing mentor and a Spanish mentor for entry-level students, and enjoyed the process of identifying challenges with the students and working with them to find a solution-oriented approach to gaining knowledge and confidence in their work. I recognize that every student learns in a unique manner, and I always aim to establish my student's need before diving into the content. As a mentor, I not only want to encourage the student's success, but also their passion and knowledge. Through my academic experiences, the best teachers were not those that simply taught the material, but made the material come alive with their stories, experiences, and passions, and it is this same approach that I bring into my mentoring.
My tutoring has been limited to in-person settings through mentor sessions and presentations, yet I am confident these skills will transfer to a positive, remote-learning experience for my students, which is a high priority to me.
