With more than twenty-five years teaching art history to secondary school and college students including those majoring in Art History, I am outstanding at making Art History come alive for the student who has little or no background in Art. While I have extensive knowledge of traditional subjects in Art History including all periods of European and American Art, I also have the expertise to teach other topics such as the History of Photography and the History of Women Artists. Having a degree in History as well as a graduate degree in Art History, I am very adept at helping students integrate a work of art into its cultural and historical context while at the same time analyzing its composition and technique. Many of the over 10,000 students which I have taught testify that my classes changed their lives and empowered them to see the world in new ways.
As the numerous subjects for which I am certified reveal, I bring to being a tutor the gift of integrating many disciplines including Art and History complete with a thorough understanding of geography, world religions, Biblical studies, philosophy, archeology, architecture, popular culture, photography, and film. I am known for having a real love for art and history and I look forward to sharing that enthusiasm for our heritage with you. As an Art Historian teaching about the various cultures of the Ancient World, I regularly discuss major archeological sites and what the excavations reveal about the peoples who lived and worked there.
As a teacher of Art Historical Methodology, I provide an in-depth look at different approaches to analyzing and appreciating art including formal analysis, iconography, iconology, and semiotics. Knowledge of additional theories which engage the student as to what constitutes a work of art include deconstruction and post-modernism.
My years teaching Design and Composition at the collegiate level also enable me to apply the principles and elements of design and composition to the critique of any works of visual art. I regularly led out in the in-depth critiques of art majors' degree projects and their portfolios for entrance into the job market.
I have taught the History of Photography for over ten years which includes a comprehensive overview of various photographers, cameras, films, photographic modes, and subject matter.
