Bio

I learned early not to be boring. I also learned early that my own enthusiasm for a subject could be the most important factor in engaging students in topics that might otherwise be tough. I’m an honors graduate of the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, but we all know that education doesn’t necessarily make a great teacher.

Add 20 years’ high school teaching experience in-person and online with rave reviews from students and parents, to 11+ years’ online instruction of college undergrads, you get a tutor or teacher who knows how to approach individuals and small or large groups with energy, empathy, and laughter. I help them get down into the subject they’re wrestling with, and emerge not only with better understanding but with confidence that they’ve got this. That’s what I love about teaching: seeing the lights come on. Let’s make this happen together.

Graphic Design

I have spent over 30 years creating effective designs for print and digital (mobile and web apps) for clients all over the world. Name a form of commercial design, advertising, or digital product and I’ve probably created it. I’ve art-directed and illustration for over 10 years and have run my own design shop for over a decade. I’m an expert with the tools designers use, having tested in the top 6% of Photoshop users and 0.01% of Illustrators tested worldwide. I am familiar with the latest design tools and can talk shop with printers, developers, engineers, and production people. That just means that usually, I know what I’m talking about. Combine with that 20+ years teaching teens and 11+ years teaching at the university level, with clarity and empathy, and you’ll get a teacher who can help you with your design projects and challenges. Struggling with your Mac? I’ve been delving into the inner workings of Macintosh maybe since before you were born—or since you and I were in college. I enjoy seeing how machines are put together and love to help others, which I do in my local community. Plus, I’m a volunteer tech tutor at the local level, helping folks with all sorts of tech issues. Computers aren’t your enemy; sometimes they’re just quirky. And you won’t break it. Expertise and patience...very engaging method of teaching.

Doug took on the task of basically teaching me Illustrator from the ground level and is very patient with a twist of humor to keep the lessons interesting. He is also quite accommodating with lesson scheduling and is very flexible. We started with the basics such as setting up my workspace and providing me with keyboard shortcuts to accommodate my specific needs. We than covered shapes, drawing, duplicate, reflect, group and ungroup, layers, properties, color pallets, pathfinder, image contour cut and text. We have also begun to work on enhancing/recreating poor image files. Thank you, Doug!
