Teaching, training, and tutoring have been my passion for as long as I can remember. I love to invest my time and energy into the success and the future of another person. There's nothing more rewarding on this earth. And I'm very good at it, which helps.

I can teach just about anything. I have a strong handle on a multitude of subjects and I seem to have a gift for helping people to get past whatever barrier is keeping them from moving to the next level in any given endeavor. I've built a career on training, even in industries where I had no prior experience. If I learn it, I can help you learn it.

And I have a particular passion for helping others build or solidify their foundation in a subject. Whether it be math, reading, writing, science, volleyball, or business; I've found that challenges at a higher level are most often rooted in some need to solidify the fundamentals. And some students just have a hard time with the anxiety that comes from not knowing the content the way they'd like to. Very often it comes down to some foundational learning tools; I am very good at helping my students learn to use those kinds of tools effectively.

My Qualifications:
-High School: Honors classes, Graduated early
-College: Business Major: Law, Nutrition, Calculus, Biology, Spanish, Political Science, Economics, etc. - All A's at CWI
-Successfully tutored dozens of students of all ages in various subjects (phonics, basic math, Composition, Calculus, long term tutoring all the way through a Business Degree, etc.)
-Taught varied subjects in the Idaho school system
-An Experienced Trainer: 20 years as a successful business manager (through effective teaching and training)
-Developed, tested, and successfully implemented training systems for multiple companies
-Teaching and investing in many kids in my personal life, (including 9 children of my own)

I have a gift for teaching, training, and tutoring anyone that needs the help. And I'd love to help you.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I've always done very well as a student and an instructor with Algebraic concepts. My students have regularly improved by 2, or even 3, letter grades in a short time. I really enjoy helping people understand the language of math. Each of us learns a little differently. My strength has been in not only teaching a concept and the 'how' involved, but for some students trying to help them better understand by looking at why. With that focus, my students have built a a strong foundation in Algebra rather than just getting through task by task and lesson by lesson.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I am qualified to teach and tutor many subjects, but The Bible and its contents are what I know most and am most passionate about. I have studied The Bible for over 30 years under several teachers, from different perspectives, and on my own. I've also been learning to practice it's teachings during that time (practical application is the most important and effective type of learning and understanding). I've taught on the subject for over 20 years in a church environment, group studies, and one on one - for adults and children of all ages. And I love it.
Business

Business

I have run businesses successfully for several companies in several industries throughout my career. I received high grades in school in that area, and related areas, and have tutored and trained others to their business degrees and to success in that field. I've also had the privilege of helping small to medium-sized businesses in a consulting capacity, have started and run businesses of my own, and worked with my own children to help them do the same (from as young as 9 years old).
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I've tutored and taught elementary age children in Math, Science, English, Reading, History, Logic (yes for little kids too), and Bible (in and out of church). I've been trained in early childhood education, have had the privilege of teaching 4th graders in a classroom environment for a year, and have some additional experience as a Sunday School teacher. But most of my experience (and my preference) with elementary age children is in one to one teaching and training. In addition to successfully working with several children as a paid tutor, I have also worked with the children of friends; and 6 of my own children are old enough to have been through some elementary teaching for Dad. After over 20 years teaching and training I've learned that I have a talent for identifying learning styles and negotiating through learning roadblocks with young students.
Logic

Logic

When I first took Logic in college, I recognized and understood the concepts quite naturally and identified the fallacies before being taught to do so. I was either trained to think that way at a very young age or it is somehow hard-wired into me. Of course putting the proper label on a given fallacy required some formal education, but understanding and teaching logical progression comes quite naturally and I've been very successful at it. I've received nothing but A's in the Logic courses that I've taken and I've never failed to see any of my students complete their Logic courses with favorable grades. I have helped a few college students with the discipline of Logic, and have trained several younger students (including elementary age) to develop critical thinking skills through a focus on logic.
Marketing

Marketing

As a Business major, I have studied marketing; and received high marks in my classes. But most of my expertise in marketing has been in practical application. I've been a successful business manager for 20 years - marketing is a vital part of any successful business. And I was the General Manager with a marketing company for some time. I have also had the privilege of teaching marketing concepts and application. I've led trainings, workshops, and courses in a corporate environment. And I've had success tutoring college students in marketing classes as well as through the whole spectrum of marketing concepts and all the way through a business or marketing degree.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I've worked with Excel in business (and personal applications) for a long time. I've built mutli-sheet applications, templates, calculation sheets, flow charts, and lots of other things for my home, small businesses, and big companies, and I have taught Excel (at a moderate level) for different organizations to different groups of employees.
Phonics

Phonics

I've taught and tutored quite a few children with their reading over the past 20 years. I've seen and used several different methods and systems to teach phonics and basic reading skills in that time. My initial training was with The Spalding method, but I have used Direct Instruction as well as different applications (games and such) with Whole Brain Teaching. I have a preference that combines these methods, but ultimately I think it's up to the parents and what they are comfortable with (teachers and tutors should always be in partnership with parents when dealing with young children). Most of my experience with phonics has been initial instruction for basic reading skills, but I have also proven myself to be an effective tutor for older students who need to go back and work on a foundation that needs strengthening. If you need a phonics tutor, I would love to help.
Social Studies

Social Studies

Throughout my own education, I was very successful in social studies courses. Even in high school I excelled in honors history and in cultural studies. I earned excellent marks (all A's, I think) in political science, economics, psychology, civics, history, geography, and other related classes. I've also tutored in social studies courses and have never failed to help my students improve their results and earn high marks.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have studied, received instruction in, and taught basic study skills several times (and in different ways) in my life. Also, as part of my training in child education, there was some focus on how our minds learn, different learning styles, and productive learning environments. And as a trainer in the business world I received and delivered quite a bit of related information. I've had the opportunity to pass on those skills to my students over the years and have seen positive changes in their education as a result. And in the business world I have found, through successfully implementing those principles, that those same skills can impact not only learning, but adaptability and efficiency in the workplace. Now I'd like to apply that training and experience by helping you learn to learn more effectively.
Volleyball

Volleyball

I played volleyball quite a bit from elementary school on up (I was on a team from the time I was 9). I played organized games in college and every day with the guys from the college team; and I have played league games since. I have tutored several players and helped out with a few teams over the years. Most importantly, I love the game.

Very gifted

I am truly amazed with how Russ interacted with my son. My son has ADHD. He gets very overwhelmed with Math. Russ was able to draw him out and get him to express what he didn't understand. Russ was so patient and explained things in a way that my son really understood. It really moved me to see my son start to "get it."

Knowledgeable and patient

After only a couple of sessions with Charlie he is able to understand what he needs to succeed in school and has started doing those things. Building a foundation that he can use the rest of his life. He and Charlie became instant friends, and Charlie is excited when he knows it's 'tutor' time. Thank you.

Worth the money!

Russ got me to understand more in just an hour session than I would spend four hours learning on my own. He was encouraging to talk to and made me feel more confident in completing my class.
