I have taught 5th grade math, science and social studies, Middle School ELA and currently teach Middle School Science at a Dual Language Magnet school in Nampa, Idaho. I have a particular skill in standardized testing. I provide tutoring to students after business hours (approximately 5:30 and later) and on weekends.

I am patient and, since I've worked in technology, and am comfortable with using technology as a teaching aid. I like to involve the parents in tutoring to teach strategies which can be transferred after I leave. I have also taught high school GED classes at the college level.

My focus is on a love of learning! Students learn when they are interested in learning! I practice an interactive learning style which is consistent with current standards-based education.

Aside from a love for history, my BA Major was in History. I had the highest GPA in History and received the Rev. Harold Stansill, SJ Award for Excellence in History from Regis University. My focus was United States Diplomatic History. Teaching and tutoring history is a love of mine. I enjoy focusing on the human element of history, not just facts and dates but how specifics movements in history affect the common citizen.

Elementary math can prove difficult for many children (and adults) if they do not know how to break down the task into smaller steps. Often parents see the end result and have forgotten how to get there. As a tutor, I break down the task into smaller steps and walk the student through the steps so they can see a simple process rather than a difficult mountain to climb.

I have taught elementary Math, Science, Social Studies and am certified in Texas and Oklahoma to teach 1-8th grades. I am qualified and trained to teach any core subject from elementary through Middle School. One of the best ways to learn to read is to read about what interests you! You don't just dive into Harry Potter or War and Peace without beginning to read small, interesting, short topics. The beginning of helping someone to learn to enjoy reading is to find out what they enjoy, finding out what interests them. From there, it is downhill.

Study Skills

Study Skills

I taught 5th Grade Math, Science and Social Studies for 3 years. During the 5th grade, a major portion of standardized testing in Oklahoma and Texas takes place. I also taught High School equivalency. Study skills are an important part of both. Without proper guidance in study skills, students do not perform well on standardized testing or for classroom testing. During classroom teaching, I would often teach skills to help students successfully study. Many skills include interest exercises, highlighting and engaging students' interests. Study is often a solitary exercise so teaching skills to maintain interest and attention can be very important.
