Hello! I am a certified K–8 teacher with a 6–9 Math endorsement and a Family and Consumer Science endorsement. I earned my Master’s in Teaching in 2006 and have more than 20 years of teaching experience, including 17 years specifically teaching middle school mathematics. For the past 12 years, I have taught in an online environment, working primarily with middle and high school students. I have extensive experience with Common Core Math and am especially comfortable tutoring students in grades 6–8 in areas such as fractions and decimals, ratios and proportions, expressions and equations, integers, geometry, statistics, and problem-solving.
One of the things I enjoy most about teaching math is helping students realize that they are capable of being successful, even when a concept initially feels difficult. My tutoring approach is to first determine exactly where a student is getting stuck rather than simply reteaching an entire lesson. I break challenging concepts into smaller, manageable steps, provide clear examples, and ask students questions that help me determine whether they truly understand the concept. I also encourage students to explain their thinking because understanding why a process works is just as important as getting the correct answer.
Every student learns differently, so I adjust my instruction based on the individual student and what works best for them. If one explanation isn't making sense, I am happy to approach the concept in a different way, use a visual model, provide additional examples, or review a foundational skill that may be causing the difficulty. My goal is to create a comfortable and encouraging tutoring environment where students feel confident asking questions and making mistakes. Ultimately, I want students to leave our sessions with stronger math skills, greater confidence, and the tools they need to become more independent learners.
