Hello. I have a great passion for learning. My hope is that my love for learning will overflow onto my students. I really love to help students understand a subject. It is so fun to see the moment when "the light turns on" and you realize that he or she totally understands what is taught. I have a Masters in Business and a Masters in Finance. I graduated with honors in both my MBA and my Bachelor's degree. During my college years, I developed certain study skills that helped me succeed, and I share those skills with my students, too!

I have excellent skills in English and literature. In fact, I received such high scores in English that Boise State University allowed me to skip my English classes and still have credit for them.

For the past four school years, I have mentored several at-risk high school students. With my mentoring program, I encourage high school students to stay in school and to do their best. I mentor up to five high school students online at a time.

I also have previous teaching experience (for children, as well as adults) with Boise Community Education, where I taught for seven years. During my tenure with Boise Community Education, I taught three classes, at a time, in five week intervals. My first class was a group of 10-15 kids ages 5-7 (Kindergarten through 2nd grade); my second class was a group of 8-12 year olds (3rd through 6th grade) and my final class was for anyone over age 12.

If you are looking for someone to do your student's work for them, then I am not for you. But, if you believe that empowering students with the skills they need to achieve success is the answer, then contact me. I have evening and weekend tutoring appointments available. My hours are especially conducive to students who have after-school activities, have a job, or whose parents have a job and need evening appointments for their children. I look forward to working with you or your student -- providing the skills you need for success.

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored several ESL students. With ESL, it is very important to ensure students have a solid foundation of the English language. I do this by giving my students a diagnostic test to identify gaps in their education. ESL students sometimes have a hard time grasping concepts, so patience is also very important. I believe strongly that all students should be taught using the language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I believe this method helps to improve retention. To aid in learning and to make learning more fun, I like having students play grammar games in addition to learning via the whiteboard and worksheets. I have seen tremendous progress in ESL students' understanding and learning of grammar and punctuation using these methods.

I have been tutoring Grammar for many years. When I entered college, my English and Grammar skills were so high, I was able to skip the two required English classes and still obtain the 6 credits for them. I believe most Grammar problems stem from a "hole" in a student's education. Therefore, I use a variety of methods to find and fill those "holes".

I have 8 years of experience helping students from Kindergarten through 8th grade in Math, Reading, English, Grammar and the Microsoft Office Suite. In addition, I have 7 years of experience teaching sign language to Kindergartners - 2nd grade, and 3rd - 6th grade. This experience provided me with various methods of teaching that has enabled me to keep the attention of children from all ages. I believe that when a person struggles with a subject, it is a direct result of a "hole" in their learning. Holes can be developed from missing school days or from a teacher who doesn't explain a concept in a way that reaches the student. My job, as their tutor, is to find whatever "holes" exist in the student's learning and "fill" them with knowledge.

Went the Extra Mile

Shannon went the extra mile to help prepare my daughter for her ACT. She works very well with her and assessed her needs and spent time helping her with her approach to the test. We recommend Shannon.

Couldn't have done it without her

Advanced finance was probably the hardest course I have ever taken. It was hard enough where others literally dropped the class. As intimidating as this course was, I could not have completed it without Shannon. She really knows her stuff and knows finance so well she can explain concepts in several different ways to help you understand. She was always there for me whether it was online or meeting in person. She was understanding when to I had to change or reschedule sessions. If you want to learn and understand finance from someone who can teach very well, you should consider Shannon.
