I've taught a variety of math and statistics classes at Drake, DMACC and other colleges. There's no substitute for hard work, but sometimes additional instruction in a private setting can make all the difference!
I provide helpful math tutoring for West Des Moines and vicinity and prefer to meet at the WDM library, although other locations are possible. Topics I have tutored include:
High School A.P. Statistics or College Statistics (a.k.a. "Business Analytics" in MBA programs)
Algebra & Precalculus, Geometry, Trigonometry, or Calculus I
As of 4/29/2017 I also have 60+ hours of experience tutoring on Wyzant's online platform. It has a virtual whiteboard with unlimited whiteboard tabs to choose from that will clearly get the point across. You can save picture files of the whiteboard afterwards. I have provided online tutoring to people in 13 states (CA, CT, FL, LA, MA, MD, MI, NC, NY, PA, UT, VA, WA) and 1 foreign country (Saudi Arabia).
I have a master's degree and work as a credentialed actuary (ACAS) at Chubb Insurance so I am am an expert with Excel spreadsheets as well. In my free time I like to play bridge competitively and go for leisurely walks around the neighborhood.
CANCELLATION POLICY: No charge for online cancellations; in person lessons must be cancelled before I leave my house for the lesson or incur a 30-minute charge. We have been very pleased with Richard's tutoring! Our daughter is developing the skills she was lacking all due to the time he has spent with her. We are very happy with our choice!
Update: In just a few weeks of tutoring our daughter's Algebra grade has already gone up!! Thanks Richard!
Without his help, I would have never passed my elementary stats class, he helped me achieve a B in he class! I haven't had a math class in over 19 years. I would highly recommend him to my friends and family. I am thankful for the help he provided to me!
If we should need math assistance again, we will definitely reach out to Richard, he was very helpful and easy to work with. I would recommend him to anyone needing help with pre-calc!
My tutoring needs are a little different as they lean into professional development for my business. Richard grasped my concept and need and we had a gameplan in about 40m. Looking forward to the collaboration & learning.
We had a great first session! He cleared up a lot of questions I had. He has eased my frustrations with my stats class.
I learned a lot from Richard even though what I thought I could using PIVOT tables could not been done because my data was not numeric. He gave me ideas that I will go over with my PROJECT LEADER, I will most likely come back to Richard with ideas after my discussion with my superior
Richard helped me get through a graduate level statistics class. As a non-traditional student who hasn't seen a classroom in 20 years, I needed some help navigating through the foundational basics of data analytics and Richard was really helpful. He was both professional and friendly. He taught with patience and was very good at adapting to my learning curve. Richard brought me from frustration to confidence in just a few sessions. I walked away with an "A" in the course thanks to Richard's help!
My son is in Trig and came to the lesson with some questions for Rich. Rich answered them all and got my son ready for the test. Rich adapted his learning style to the lesson and problems. My son commented that he would like to be that smart just for "like three days". Thanks Rich!!
We have been very pleased with Richard. He is always on time, is prepared and ready to go. Our daughter sends him a message when she needs help and he meets her at the assigned place. Once we got it set up its easy for me, the parent, and effective help for my daughter. Thanks Richard!
After failing every quiz and test all term Richard was able to help my failing son get a 69% on his Term exam. A 69% isn't a bragging right, but after only 3 weeks of tutoring with Richard he made a significant improvement and without it he would have failed the term.
If you struggle with math and want to learn an easier way to understand the most difficult things mathematics presents, book a lesson with this guy asap!
My first meeting with Richard was very good. He was very knowledgeable and very professional. We met at library and everything went great!
I am a 46 year old graduate student at Colorado State University. I hired Rich to help me with my recent statistics course which was giving me problems. Rich was extremely helpful throughout the process. We worked together at my home as well as a fair amount of simple e-mail correspondence. Rich is very flexible in this regard. Bottom line, my grade improved and it produced a positive outcome. Very appreciate of Rich's efforts and help!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an ACAS (Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society) and have taught the first actuarial science course at Drake University in the past.
Regarding my qualifications to tutor in finite math, I have experience tutoring on functions, linear regression and applications.
I have also tutored systems of equations and linear programming successfully. I taught probability, random variables, and set theory at Drake University twice.
I have a sufficient understanding of linear algebra, having taken two courses in the subject in college, but it is a topic that doesn't come up every day.
With regards to finance, I got an A in an MBA finance course and also have passed actuarial exams relating to interest theory.
I will certainly be able to tutor the subject matter in finite math.
I have taught probability classes for actuarial science majors at Drake University in the past. Basic probability has also been a topic within introductory statistics classes I have taught.
I have taught introductory statistics classes at Drake University and a local community college in the past. Topics covered calculation of important values, probability, central limit theorem, and hypothesis testing using Normal, T, F, and Chi-square distributions.
