Hello! My name is Elizander and I graduated Magna Cum Laude from New York University's College of Arts and Science with a BA in English and American Literature with a concentration in Creative Writing and minors in Psychology and Creative Writing. I completed an undergraduate thesis for departmental honors, where I produced a 40-60 page thesis focused on three contemporary poetry collections.
In high school, I was a peer tutor, helping fellow students during study period with Spanish, math, and science. Since then, I have tutored elementary through high school aged students in math and humanities courses both virtually and in person at libraries.
I also spent time in a high school AP Calculus AB classroom as a volunteer assistant in a Cleveland public school. As someone who had just taken the AP Calculus AB test, I was able to help the teacher, who had just begun teaching this course, communicate difficult concepts in different ways so that each student had a better chance of grasping the material for the test.
As a tutor, my goal has always been to help students feel comfortable with the material. Yes, we all want the correct answer, but it's difficult to get the right answer if the question causes undue stress. I am a big proponent of finding different ways to explain things because no two people think alike or have the same experiences. As a strong writer who also took college-level Calculus I and General Chemistry 1 & 2, I understand a variety of approaches to explain topics from all kinds of disciplines.
I am currently pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Iowa.
