I've been teaching chess players from all ages since 2022 and I would love to pass my knowledge and love of the game to you. My targeted audience is anyone with USCF/FIDE ratings of 1000-1900, but I can also provide great training and guidance for anyone above. My teaching philosophy revolves around delivering a personalized, concrete chess curriculum for each of my students while helping them learn how to train independently and maximize their potential. Since starting my coaching career two years ago, I have been fortunate to work with Lessonpal and Wyzant, and most recently, I was hired as one of the main online coaches for Chess4Life! I hope you consider working with me!

Chess

Hello Everyone! My name is Michael T. I am a USCF NM (National Master) with a USCF rating of 2205 and a FIDE rating 2051. I originally started coaching because I wanted to give back to my community; that's given so much to me. Throughout my playing career, I have had the privilege of working with GM Mykhaylo Oleksiyenko, GM Gregory Kaidanov, and NM James Neal, to name a few. I hope to bring some of what they taught me to help you improve! My teaching philosophy I believe that we work the best when we have a plan. Often, I find myself and other chess players aimlessly playing chess online with no real motivation (don't do it!). When we do that, we waste time and do not improve any part of our game. If you decide to work with me, we'll devise a reliable training plan centered around training our calculation and doing our work over a physical board. As my former GM coach Mykhaylo Oleksiyenko says, EVERYONE (and I mean EVERYONE) must practice calculation. If we don't practice that skill, we'll spend too much time finding trivial moves and missing things. Don't be that person! I believe you can get away with a core understanding of openings and endgames, but mastering middlegames is a must because most chess games are decided in that phase. In addition, I will have you do your work over a physical board because, as competitors, we want to mimic tournament conditions as closely as possible. Sure, getting out our laptops and doing chess online is much easier, but it won't yield the same results if we work hard to train as if competing. What makes me a great teacher As your coach, I hope to balance my motivation to help you improve with the compassion to help you get through stressful situations. As competitors, we often have upsetting moments when we lose a game or lose confidence in ourselves. That's ok! I've felt the same way too! Having worked with many younger children, I have experience helping them work through their emotions while providing support. While my goal is to help you improve your chess, I also hop

True teacher and mentor

Michael is more than a chess tutor to our daughter. He shows real interest in our child's learning and through each lesson he encourages her to see different possibilities in her games and think things through and analyze each move. He takes careful notes and provide very specific suggestions and lesson summary to help us track progress. We can already see our daughter grow in confidence and in her love for chess in the short period of time that Michael has been working with her. I would say that what makes Michael truly unique as a tutor is his sincerity and humility. Even though he is an advanced player he is able to relate to beginners and guide them with patience and share his real passion of chess with students. We couldn't be more grateful that our daughter is so lucky to have found a true teacher and mentor like Michael.

Enthusiastic, patient and knowledgeable

Michael has been working with my son (age 13) for a few weeks now. My son has experience in chess and tournaments, but he still has a lot to learn, and Michael has the expertise to teach him chess theories and methods that he would not otherwise know. Michael is always prepared, patient, and enthusiastic about chess. He challenges my son to approach chess from a different perspective. He is also very flexible when we have to change the dates/times of the lessons. I would highly recommend Michael as a chess tutor.

The first lesson with teacher Michael went very well. During assessment, teacher Michael carefully observed my son, quickly understood his playing style and provided helpful guidance immediately. He is very knowledgeable and honest. We are lucky to meet him. My son can’t wait for the next lesson with teacher Michael.

Wonderful chess teacher

We've had the pleasure of having Michael as Jimmy's chess teacher for the past two months, and the experience has been nothing short of exceptional. With a wealth of experience, Michael brings a deep understanding of chess strategies to each lesson, explaining them in a way that is both engaging and easy to understand. What truly sets Michael apart is the patience and kindness exhibited in every interaction, creating a learning environment where Jimmy feels both supported and challenged. The improvement in Jimmy's chess skills has been remarkable. He not only plays with more confidence but also thinks more strategically about each move. We highly recommend Michael to anyone looking for an outstanding chess teacher who can make a real difference in their child's development in the games
