Hello! I'm Cathleen. I have a passion for learning and several degrees across various disciplines. I hold an MA in behavioral economics, am a published academic, and have taught at the college level, in NYC, Iowa City and online.
My BA in Literature, Science and the Arts, from the University of Iowa, is a broad degree that requires 4 minors and an overarching thesis. My minors were: Anthropology, Linguistics, Comparative Literature and Philosophy. For my thesis, I assisted a renowned scholar in reconstructing Proto-Mayan from over 30 contemporary Mayan languages. This work was published as a book. I'm qualified to teach ESL, have studied multiple languages, and discovered best practices that help with language comprehension and retention.
Between undergraduate and graduate school, I lived in Santa Fe. There I worked as a legal assistant and a photojournalist while attending The Anthropology Film Center to study documentary filmmaking, graphic design and photography. I've been working in the digital design arena for over 15 years and am happy to teach creative subjects, such as design, color composition or marketing.
I love traveling and exploring new cultures. I've lived in several cities in the USA, as well as Mexico, Italy and the Netherlands.
I'm currently a substitute teacher for all grade levels and subjects. My approach is "Socratic" in nature, focusing on the what, why and how of subject material. I've often noticed that students of all ages are tasked with learning a topic when they don't even know what the topic IS to begin with. My strategy is to discuss the topic in context to enable understanding at a holistic level before attempting to memorize or complete tasks. I do adapt teaching strategies to student needs and have taught across all aptitude levels, including Special Education. I have been privileged to realize that some students in Special Ed have a wealth of knowledge that simply hasn't been tapped into yet, and it's my great pleasure to help bring this to light!
Thank you!
