I’m the person in my office that people approach when they want to know how to do things.

Aside from earning my Ph.D. in mathematics from North Dakota State University, I am an innovative teacher, data junkie, solution seeker, communicator, and parent. For those who don’t see the connection between parenting and tutoring, I’ve been guiding my children on their pathway to independence. This includes fielding questions that seem to come out of nowhere and continuously adapting systems for superimposing order over the chaos that is life. For parents out there, I can help you understand what your children are doing with their homework.

I started teaching mathematics in grad school in 2003 and haven’t left the classroom since then. Primarily, my students are college students pursuing degrees in mathematics, engineering, science, education, and business. I’ve taught: math for preservice elementary teachers, prestatistics, statistics, intermediate algebra, precalculus, calculus (differential, integral, multivariable), number theory, abstract algebra, and first-year composition.

Tutoring sessions generally work best when people know what it is they want to get better at doing. When students come to me without this direction, we spend time articulating and refining what it is they want to know. Once this direction has been established, I can help them learn. Sometimes, establishing a direction is enough for them to answer their own questions.

Calculus

Calculus

I've taught differential calculus, integral calculus, multivariable calculus, and differential equations. For me, the main key is visualizing what is being asked and putting the task in perspective. The secondary key is identifying what parts from precalculus are rusty and need to be refreshed.
Common Core

Common Core

I've taught math for preservice teachers with a highlight on the common core for quite a few years now. My first focus is always the eight standards of mathematical practice and then pursuing them down into whatever specific content standard students are striving to learn. While it is difficult to pick a favorite standard of mathematical practice, I have to choose MP6, "Mathematically proficient students will attend to precision." If we do not have good language and attention to detail, it is challenging to do anything.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Knowing what comes after prealgebra allows me to bring out what students need to know from each tutoring session.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I've been teaching mathematics at the college level for more than 15 years. While my heart belongs to logarithms, I am happy to work with rational functions, trigonometry, and all other precalculus topics as well. Having taught subjects that come after precalculus (calculus and beyond), I can also put into perspective why different topics are important for students to learn.

Excellent, patient tutor

Amanda is an excellent educator. She meets students where they are in their learning journey. She engages holistically, e.g., noticing facial expressions and encouraging students to “think out loud.” She also focuses on building note taking skills and helping students reference them as they work through the material with her. The goal is help students be armed with information to reference on their own as they continue the learning process. I wholeheartedly recommend!
