It's summer! As a third grade teacher in Des Moines, I am truly excited for a change of pace. I love teaching! It has been a busy year, and I am craving one-on-one time with students which just isn't possible in the regular school year. I am eager to develop new relationships with students with no distractions of day-to-day school life.
I have been teaching for over 20 years and have much knowledge and experience to bring to a learner. I love to be creative with students and engage them so that they see learning is exciting and life-long! I teach in an Artful Learning building which means I value integration of arts and concepts. I am excited to continue learning about the world around me and am inspired to research people, places, and events that are relevant to student interests.
My perfect tutoring situation would be one that follows a course of study inspired by the student's interest and excitement. We would use technology for research, seek out arts-based strategies, and make connections with as many "subjects" and life experiences as we could. We would ask questions, seek answers, and learn together! All of this would be grounded in common core expectations. I love to think BIG and can get very excited...field trip opportunities to make these connections come alive would be amazing!
I have been teaching reading and writing my entire teaching career! I have taught 2nd-5th grades with the most of my classroom experience in third grade. I taught students in Elementary Special Education programs for 8 years in Des Moines. I understand individual needs, and I know how to make strong connections between reading, writing, and areas of student interest. I have a large classroom library from which to pull text that will engage students and am not afraid to seek alternate reading experiences and projects to hook my students.
I teach Common Core subjects daily. I refer to the common core continually when making lesson plans and meeting with my principal and other teachers when collaborating. While I am most familiar with third grade, I know how to easily access and implement all levels of the common core in elementary.
I have many experiences that make me qualified to help elementary students of all levels. I have taught special education for 8 years which encompassed the range of elementary levels, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades for one year each, and now have been in third grade for at least 11 years. I have excellent strategies to share and help students develop in all elementary subjects. As much as possible I like to help students make connections to what they know, build upon their strengths, and reach out to new learning experiences that are exciting and motivating. Pulling things together with a central concept that incorporates a project-based, artful approach is what reaches students best. I can do that!
Please let me help your child get excited about learning! I want so much to be able to explore new concepts and topics with young friends as I help them become stronger with basic skills. If I can help "hook them" into learning, they'll be on their way to being self-motivated learners, inspired to know and do more, more, more! It's summer! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching in the Des Moines Public Schools for over 20 years. I know what students need to succeed and understand testing requirements and common core expectations. I appreciate connections students make between curricular areas to make learning meaningful with common core.
I have been teaching in Iowa at the Des Moines Public Schools for over 20 years. I know the common core very well for third grade and know how to access and use it for other elementary grades. I have taught special education (8years) and 2nd-5th grades. I work hard to help students make connections between all subject areas.
