Hi, I'm Jeremiah. I've taught English courses at the University of Wisconsin, Viterbo University, Luther College and the University of Iowa, which U.S. News and World Report recently ranked the #1 public university for writing. Some of these courses include Composition, Rhetoric, Fiction, Poetry, Literature, Writing for Media and more. In the summer, I also teach high school and middle school students at the Iowa Young Writers' Studio and the Iowa Youth Writing Project.
My interest in writing started from the age of twelve, when I wrote poems to relatives for their birthdays. As I grew up, I went on to pursue my B.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. I continued my education at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where I earned my M.F.A. in Fiction in 2022.
Whether it's college admissions essays, personal narratives or position papers, my approach to tutoring starts with comprehension. I believe writing is the art of thinking clearly on the page, and as such I encourage students to explore their unique perspectives via diligent note-taking and creative journaling exercises. Line-editing and proofreading are important skills, but I like to return to the big picture as much as possible by asking questions like: Why are you writing this? What do you have to say that no one else can?
I embrace differences of opinion and experience.
I believe good tutors should have their own record of publication to demonstrate accomplishment in their field. In addition to teaching and tutoring, my own writing has been published in "The Paris Review," "Salon," "Fifty Grande Magazine," "The Indianapolis Review," "The Palisades Review," "Wild Hyacinth," "New Moon Magazine," "Grey Sparrow," "Badlands Literary Journal," and "Where Y'at Magazine." I am a recipient of an Iowa Arts Fellowship and a finalist for the John Leggett Fiction Prize.
