Dear students,

I believe that anyone can learn anything, with the right guidance. I've taught hundreds of people, from middle schoolers to adult learners. Whatever you're working on, we will tackle it together!

A little information about me: I have a BA in math, summa cum laude, from Dartmouth College, and a PhD in math from Northwestern University.

I've always been a teacher at heart. In high school, I was a volunteer math tutor. For most of college, I worked as a math tutor and study group leader. During my 6 years as a grad student, I served as a TA; one year, I was named the best TA in my department. As a postdoc for 3 years, I had the pleasure of teaching my own math courses. Once again, I was named the best postdoctoral teacher in the whole Northwestern Math Department.

Courses Taught:
- Calculus (all levels)
- Linear algebra
- Foundations of Higher Math (an intro to logic, sets, and writing proofs)

Courses Tutored:
- Pre-algebra and algebra (all levels)
- Geometry
- Precalculus
- Calculus (all levels)
- Statistics
- Differential equations
- Linear algebra
- Number theory
- Real analysis

Given my advanced graduate coursework and research experience, I'd also be comfortable teaching most other college math classes, from finite math to topology or abstract algebra. Finally, I'd like to help you prepare for tests, such as SAT math, ACT math, or AP Calculus. I have personal experience studying for these tests and doing well -- I got 1600 on the SAT, and scored 5 on all my AP exams -- so I know what they take.

I will try my best to accommodate your needs, and match my teaching to your learning style. In general, I think getting good at math requires lots of practice, like sports or music. So, we'll work through lots of practice problems together. I'll also illustrate concepts with pictures and vivid examples. And if you have math or testing anxiety, I will try to help you work through that.

I want you to feel the sense of empowerment that comes when you realize, "Hey, I can do

Calculus

Calculus

Calculus is one of my favorite math subjects, and it’s the one I have the most experience tutoring. Ever since I started college, almost 20 years ago, calculus tutoring has been one of my main jobs. I’ve also taught calculus courses in a university setting - everything from calc 1 to surface integrals and Stokes’ theorem. My teaching evaluations have always been excellent, with many students telling me I’m the best math teacher they ever had. Given my PhD in math, I’m definitely an expert in the subject matter, but I’m also good at bringing it down to earth. I have a knack for explaining the ideas clearly, simply, and with helpful pictures that can make things a lot less intimidating. Let me be your guide to this challenging but fascinating subject!
Finite Math

Finite Math

As a math Ph.D., I am extremely comfortable with the topics in a finite math course - linear equations, matrices, linear programming, and elementary probability and counting problems. In my many years of tutoring and classroom teaching, I’ve taught most of these topics multiple times. I’m also more than capable of helping you with financial math: compound interest, annuities, and amortization. Let me make these ideas clear and simple for you!
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is one of those subjects that can open doors for you. It shows up literally all over the place in pure and applied math. Learning it is like being given a master key. I can help you get there. As a math PhD, I’m extremely proficient in linear algebra. I’m also a skilled, caring teacher, with both tutoring and classroom teaching experience in linear algebra. I have a knack for explaining the ideas clearly and simply, and, where possible, illustrating with pictures. Let me be your guide to this interesting, important subject!
Logic

Logic

As a math Ph.D., I’m extremely skilled at reading and writing proofs, which are rigorous logical arguments. Logic is the lifeblood of math. I have also, several times, taught a course at Northwestern called Foundations of Higher Mathematics (Math 300), which is an introduction to logic, set theory, and proofs. I have helped dozens of students through these challenging, rewarding ideas, and I can do the same for you!

transformative college math tutor

We are so grateful for Kiran’s help teaching our son over the past two and a half years in various college math courses. He ended his advanced linear algebra with a high grade and the confidence to take his math skills into his computer science major. I can’t say enough about this caring and skilled math tutor.

Wonderful teacher

We found Kieran several years ago when our child was struggling with high school math. Kieran has worked with us for several years now and really helps our child understand college level math better than the college professor. Such an asset!

My son loves him - best calculus tutor!

My son is in honors calclus- not easy! He said that Kiran makes everything so clear and he loves working with him. As a parent I can tell you that Kiran is so responsive to all of my sons math needs and is always up to date with classwork problem sets of the day

wonderful college math tutor

Kiran has worked as our son’s college calculus tutor over the past year, getting him through the entire calc series with a variety of college instructors who were not always clear or direct in their methods or grading. It was truly because of Kiran’s consistency and guidance every week in teaching (and re-teaching) lessons that we felt in the end he really was our son’s calculus professor. The trust he has built in the student-teacher relationship has given our son a renewed confidence in math that got squelched during the pandemic. He is now at a very high level of math and continuing to work with Kiran in Discrete Mathematics. We feel confident in his math skills and study habits moving forward because of the time and attention Kiran put into preparing study guides, reviewing content, writing practice exams, and always remaining patient with our autistic/ADHD son. This one is truly a gem - I can’t believe we found him and have retained his services for so long! Hire him now before he takes on a full professorship!

Linear Algebra

He is very methodical and considerate. He explains concepts very well. Good tutor for sure. His rate is a bit high but We plan to continue with him for rest of this semester.

An excellent tutor

He is teaching my son for about a year; I do not know any specifics except that he find it very helpful. The required review has to be 160 characters, so I am trying to come up with more to say. I think a returning student should prove the teaching is good.

Amazing, kind and knowledgeable tutor!

Kiran is absolutely wonderful! My daughter said that he is so kind and knowledgeable. He is patient and great at explaining things. He drew out concepts so she could visualize the material better. He also took the time to review her material prior to her session. I am so grateful to have come across such an amazing tutor!

Patient and transformative college math tutor

We hired Kiran to work with our college freshman in his Linear Algebra course after having to drop the prior semester with an F at midterm. Kiran worked tirelessly twice a week with our son, reviewing math concepts he likely missed during the pandemic and getting him caught up to new and challenging material. He prepared study guides, additional problems, and also helped him improve in study skills and test taking strategies. Our son is autistic/ADHD - very bright and working toward a computer science degree, but still learning how to employ his strengths and overcome barriers. He never complained about getting online to meet with Kiran and always spoke of him with high regard and respect. Kiran also helped encourage him to self-advocate when the professor misgraded a problem and the one time he missed a deadline. Kiran communicated with me weekly on progress as well as getting the online text materials. It was obvious he put in significant time prepping for sessions and often followed up when they hit a hard problem to make sure concepts were clarified. My son scored an 87.7% on the final exam and was the happiest I have seen him all year. What a fantastic way to end his first year in college! I truly feel like our son has regained math self-esteem and is excited to move on to the next challenging math class with the support of his caring and knowledgeable tutor.

Awesome tutor!

I highly recommend Kiran for anyone looking for a math tutor. He is extremely knowledgable, patient, kind, and went above and beyond. (Texting questions off tutor hours) I would not have made it through college math without his help!

Best Tutor Ever

He was patient and clear with his explanations. I was able to pass my number theory class with confidence.
