I’m Dr. Matthew L. — a professional physicist and computer scientist with over two decades of academic experience. I hold a Ph.D. in Physics and a master’s in Computer Science, and I specialize in helping students understand deeply rather than just memorize.

Whether you’re navigating physics, mathematics, or diving into Python and algorithms, I can help you build confidence and mastery. I bring a friendly, clear, and patient approach to every session, and I’m especially skilled at working with students who consider themselves “not math people.”

I have over 15 years' experience as a university teaching assistant for both Penn State University and Iowa State University, for undergraduate- and graduate-level coursework in physics and computer science. I also have past tutoring experience; my proudest accomplishment was tutoring a student in engineering physics who came in with a D- toward finishing with an A. I tend to prefer the Socratic method in my teaching approaches. I believe it is the most rewarding when a student can arrive upon the correct answer on their own, perhaps with a guiding word or two of mine.

Over my career, my students have been almost exclusively undergraduate and graduate university students. I have been the teaching assistant for classes as small as a dozen and classes of 200+. My coursework has ranged from as simple as Microsoft Office applications through as complex as General Relativity, and a lot in between. My prior tutoring work was one-on-one. However, note that I am open and willing to tutor high school level subjects; here again, my strengths lie in physics, mathematics, and computer science. I also offer help in writing.

If you’re ready to level up your skills and truly "get" the material, I’d be honored to help.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I hold a Ph.D. in Physics and a Master’s in Computer Science, and I have years of experience working with students in foundational mathematics. Algebra I is a subject I enjoy teaching because it builds the critical thinking and pattern recognition skills essential for higher math and science. I take a patient and structured approach, tailoring each session to the student’s pace and goals. Whether you're struggling with the basics or just need help reviewing, I aim to make algebra clear, logical, and even enjoyable.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I hold a Ph.D. in Physics and have over a decade of experience teaching mathematics, including Algebra 2, at the high school and collegiate levels. My tutoring emphasizes conceptual understanding, problem-solving strategies, and making abstract topics concrete and manageable. I’ve guided students of all skill levels to improved grades and stronger math confidence. Whether you're preparing for exams or just want to strengthen fundamentals, I can help you master Algebra 2.
C

C

I have over 25 years of experience programming in C, including general computing, and numerical simulation. My background includes a bachelor's and master's in computer science, and a PhD in Physics, during which I wrote and optimized C code for data analysis and a programming language interpreter. I can help students understand core concepts such as pointers, memory management, and structured programming, and guide them through both academic assignments and real-world C applications. Whether you’re a beginner or tackling advanced code, I can meet you at your level.
Calculus

Calculus

I hold a Ph.D. in Physics and have taught calculus concepts from first principles to multivariable and beyond. My background allows me to help students connect calculus to real-world applications in science, engineering, and computer science. Whether you're struggling with limits, derivatives, integrals, or optimization, I provide clear, structured support tailored to your pace. I work with high school, AP, and college-level students to build both understanding and confidence.
Linux

Linux

I have over 25 years of experience working in Linux environments, both as a user and as a system administrator. At Iowa State University, I helped maintain the High Energy Physics (HEP) group’s Linux cluster, supporting researchers through scripting, package management, and system upkeep and upgrades. I’ve also used Linux extensively for high-performance computing on national supercomputing platforms, writing and optimizing code for large-scale simulations in physics. Whether you're just learning the Linux command line or preparing to work in research or development environments, I can guide you with practical, real-world expertise.
Physics

Physics

I hold a Ph.D. in Physics and have taught everything from Newtonian mechanics to advanced topics like quantum theory, relativity, and particle and nuclear physics. My research background includes both experimental work (e.g., with CERN) and theoretical modeling. I specialize in breaking down complex topics for students at any level — whether you're preparing for the AP exam or tackling upper-level university physics. My approach is highly adaptive, emphasizing intuition, problem-solving strategies, and real-world application.
Python

Python

I hold a Ph.D. in Physics and a Master’s in Computer Science, and I have extensive experience using Python for simulation, data analysis, machine learning, and scientific computing. Whether you're new to programming or need help with advanced topics, I can help you build fluency and confidence. My sessions focus on practical applications, clear explanations, and patient, step-by-step guidance.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I hold a Ph.D. in Physics and a Master’s in Computer Science, and I’ve taught trigonometry concepts for over a decade. From unit circles and radians to identities, graphs, and real-world applications, I help students grasp both the “why” and the “how.” Whether you’re preparing for a test, struggling with sine and cosine laws, or just need a confidence boost, I’ll meet you where you are and build from there. My sessions are relaxed, focused, and tailored to each student’s pace and learning style.
