Hello! My name is Matthew. I graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelors in Environmental Science and Technology, and followed that up with a Master’s in Forest Resources and Conservation from the University of Florida. Throughout my educational career, having teachers who left an impact beyond simply going through the motions has yielded highly effective and rewarding educational experiences. From focusing on unique topics, to using unorthodox teaching methods, and ultimately being invested beyond the minimum level of effort required, this type of teaching has gone a long way for me in both education and life. I try to implement similar methods in my lessons with my students in order to leave them with similarly profound experiences.

My most recent teaching experience was for an undergraduate Silviculture course. I worked with over 25 students, and responded to individual concerns as well as those of grouped students. I was available to students during field trip-style labs, in class, and during office hours. Moreover my experience as an environmental education intern allowed me to work with a wide range of K-12 students as well as the occasional college group. My team developed environmentally-themed curricula involving preliminary lesson-themed ice breaker games, followed by activities ranging from play to discussion depending on the age, size, and preference of the group. I helped to lead these programs but was always available to interact with individual students and respond to an array of concerns.

I want to present a resource for students to gain scientific knowledge in a manner that will leave a lasting impression. I also want to encourage conceptualized learning as opposed to memorization, unless the latter is necessary. That said, I am willing to implement and include any resources that parents desire, while also welcoming feedback. I can always be contacted and will readily respond to questions. Please do not hesitate to reach out for a lesson!

Botany

Between 2016 and 2017 I worked in at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center within the National Germplasm Resources Laboratory as a Biological Science Technician. Plant upkeep and assessment for viral inoculation were regular tasks. As a graduate research assistant at the University of Florida I inventoried and measured numerous redbay (Persea borbonia) trees in order to assess natural and artificial regeneration potential. For the past two years I have helped to operate a composting operation in which research trials on various plant species is an important aspect of research and development of adequate compost.
