I am a certified Biology teacher who has passed three state teaching exams (CT, MA, and TX) and has been a credentialed Biology teacher for grades 7-12 in Massachusetts, Texas, and Rhode Island. I have taught science to grades 7-9 in the classroom and tutored students ages 5-18 after school.

I really enjoy working one-on-one with students to help them make lasting connections with the material they are studying. As an experienced classroom teacher, I know how to modify curriculum to meet various student needs. I also know how to use data to assess your student's current areas of strength and weakness so we can be most efficient with our time. Finally, I LOVE science and enjoy sharing my excitement for the topic with my students.

In addition to tutoring students in the sciences, I also have experience working as a tutor for students needing help with study and organizational skills. Outside of Wyzant, I have enjoyed tutoring ESL students around the world.

My education includes a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Connecticut and a double major in Biology and Environmental Science at The College of William of Mary.

I am a certified teacher for middle and high school but have tutored elementary students as well. As a certified classroom teacher for middle and high school, I know the importance of the foundational skills students must learn in elementary school to be successful in middle school and beyond. When students are in elementary school, they need to work on the memorization of key facts, which is often viewed as a chore. My goal as a tutor is to make learning fun. I love to use tools such as play-dough and coloring sheets to help my students engage in their learning.

I have worked with middle and high school ESL students in the classroom and one-on-one for the past 3 years.  I believe I am successful with ESL students because I have had several personal experiences as a non-native speaker.  In high school, I studied abroad for a semester in Germany.  Additionally, my husband's family often speaks exclusively in their native language. These experiences have allowed me to empathize with ESL students.  I am a very patient tutor and truly enjoy helping ESL students feel more comfortable and confident as they work on their English skills.  
Genetics

Genetics

Genetics is a discipline of biology that focuses on the genes, heredity, and variation found in living organisms. As a Biology major at The College of William and Mary, I really enjoyed this course. As a certified science teacher, I have helped many students navigate this topic. Topics in genetics range from the tiny molecules that make up DNA to the proteins that DNA molecules code for. Proteins created through the transcription and translation process are used in a variety of ways by organisms and make up their visible characteristics. For this reason, genetics is appealing to those interested in biology at the microscopic level as well as the macroscopic level. I'd love to be your guide to this exciting subject.
Praxis

As a certified teacher, I had to study for and take the Praxis exam. In addition to the Praxis, I have also passed the MTEL and TEA tests. I am happy to help other educators prepare for this test and share my experiences.
Study Skills

Study Skills

Study skills are so important to student success in any subject. I work with students to first find an organizational method that works best for them. Next, I help students break down the material from the eyes of an instructor. Finally, I stress the importance of time management and work with students to help them develop this skill. This is one of the most important skills students can learn for school and life! As a teacher, I have witnessed very smart students perform poorly due to a lack of study and organizational skills. I enjoy helping students recognize the value of strong study skills and seeing their grades improve as a result of our work together. Let's set your student up for success today!

Excellent...what luck!

Catherine was very accessible and quick to respond. She offered flexibility in her schedule since we had a last minute test prep and was punctual. Catherine established rapport with my daughter very quickly. By the third session she was asking when she could have her tutor again. I particularly liked that Catherine provided in depth feedback promptly after session by email. She also went above and beyond in researching how to best help my daughter prepare for a private school test and explained her opinion on my daughter's strengths and weaknesses. Highly recommended.
