Hello! My name is Ben, and I am a current student at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. My path to Vanderbilt was convoluted, to say the least, but I loved every step of the process. I applied to colleges over the course of 3 different application cycles: during my senior year of high school, during my postgraduate year at a boarding school, and the transfer cycle during my freshman year at college.
My college application was unique: my grades were average, but I had strong extracurriculars from which I was able to craft a powerful narrative on why I was a great fit for some top-tier schools. I managed to gain admission to schools that, on paper, were out of reach for my 3.3 GPA and 1300 SAT.
Over the course of 3 college application cycles applying to over 40 schools and officially visiting over 60, I began to realize that the traditional idea that “only grades matter” was inherently flawed. I was able to turn my lackluster high school performance into a compelling case for admission by outlining why that weakness made me a stronger candidate. This principle proved to be successful evidenced by acceptances to Pepperdine University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Miami, and American University just to name a few. These were schools that were out of my reach according to average acceptance metrics, but I was able to move the needle using essays.
