About Joseph

Hello,

My name is Joseph. I'm a scientist, lifelong learner, and seasoned educator with 10+ yrs of experience helping students of all ages succeed in Language, Math, and Science courses. As a professional educator, my versatility, patience, and passion for education are some of the attributes I'm known for. I also have years of documented experience teaching in a classroom setting.

I usually prepare sessions based on my student's needs and goals, current grade, degree of complexity of the subject matter, and students' familiarity with such so it's important that I gather such information prior to starting lessons. Teaching others something or merely conveying an idea or concept, and doing it well, is something that I'm passionate about, and aspire to.

***WINNER OF THE MYRLE CLARK AWARD IN CREATIVE WRITING***

Thanks for your interest. I look forward to working with you.

Best,

Joseph.

**P.S.: Group lessons are defined as those covering the same material for all students involved, and must be clearly defined, agreed upon, and communicated to me by all participants prior to scheduling.**

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

AFOQT

I usually approach preparing my students for the AFOQT in a very similar fashion as I approach preparing students to take other multi-subject exams: by showing them how to tackle typical practice problems in a simple and time-efficient way. For many years now, this has proven to be a very effective approach. All of my students who followed my tutorials and guidance passed their exams, and so can you!

Biology

I'm a versatile and seasoned molecular biologist and educator tutoring in various branches of biology. I've aced every upper level biology course in my undergrad years, and can show you how to ace yours as well.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've been tutoring K-6th grade age children for nearly a decade now, and have taught at two different private schools in Colorado for four years, which was a terrific learning experience for me as an early educator due to the highly diverse demographics of that part of the Country because many of the children were also Spanish-speaking, and very often, from different cultures.
As a seasoned private tutor, I've been developing lessons in Language, Arts, Math, Science & Social Studies that keep my students engaged through fun, interactive, project-based activities, such as science projects, games, and multimedia activities, and that correlate to State-standards.
Furthermore, through my years of experience tutoring and teaching K-6th graders, I've had the privilege to be educated, and well-trained on different practical and philosophical approaches to early education such as Montessori, Reggio-Emilia, and Brain-Based Learning.

ESL/ESOL

I currently teach ESL at Hawaii Palms English School here in Waikiki, HI, and have had the opportunity to work with students of all ages and backgrounds: children, teenagers, and adults from Japan, China, Korea, Italy, France, Russia, etc.

Grammar

I've been tutoring, and helping students improve their writing & grammar for the last four years, including creative writing and different types of academic papers.

Great impression!

Joseph made a strong impression on my 9 yr old son right away. He is professional and positive. He is respectful and sincere in his conversation and instruction, and my son responded to that immediately. Joseph is well-organized and efficient. My son is motivated to continue working with him and is gaining interest and confidence in his spelling abilities. Mahalo Joseph!
