Bio

I'm a writer, editor, and writing coach with an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, where I also taught undergraduate English composition, literature, and creative writing. Before that I worked in my university's Writing Center, where I spent hours each week doing exactly what tutoring requires: sitting with a student and their draft, figuring out together what the writing is trying to do and how to make it do that better.

My own writing has been recognized with fellowships from Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony, a Pushcart Prize nomination, and selection for Best American Essays. I've published fiction and nonfiction in national literary journals. I tell students this not to impress them but because I think it matters that their writing coach is someone who actually writes — who knows what it feels like to struggle with a draft, to find the right structure, to get a sentence to finally say what you mean.

I work with students at all levels, from middle school through college. My approach is collaborative and encouraging — I'm not here to rewrite your work or hand you the answers, but to help you understand what strong writing looks like and develop the skills to get there yourself. That means different things for different students: sometimes it's structure and organization, sometimes it's clarity and concision, sometimes it's finding your voice and trusting it.

For college admissions essays in particular, I've helped students move past the generic and find the specific, personal story that makes an application memorable.

I'm patient, direct, and genuinely enjoy this work. If you're looking for someone who takes writing seriously and will take your writing seriously too, I'd love to work with you.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, where I taught undergraduate creative writing as well as composition and literature. My own creative work has been recognized with fellowships from Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony, a Pushcart Prize nomination, and selection for Best American Essays, and I have published fiction and nonfiction in national literary journals including EPOCH and The Florida Review. I work with students on the full range of creative writing concerns — voice, structure, point of view, imagery, and revision — and bring both the discipline of a working writer and the patience of an experienced teacher to every session.
English

English

I hold an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, where I taught undergraduate English composition, rhetoric, and literature. I also worked in the university Writing Center, providing one-on-one feedback to students on written work at all stages of the process. I have tutored students from middle school through college on academic writing, essay structure, and close reading. My own writing has been recognized with fellowships from Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony, a Pushcart Prize nomination, and selection for Best American Essays, and I have published fiction and nonfiction in national literary journals.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I taught undergraduate English composition and rhetoric at the university level and worked in a university Writing Center, where I provided one-on-one feedback to students on essays at every stage of the writing process. I also taught undergraduate literature courses, which involved assigning and evaluating analytical essays — giving me a clear sense of what instructors are looking for and how to help students meet those expectations. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing and bring a writer's eye to essay structure, argumentation, clarity, and voice — the things that separate competent writing from genuinely compelling writing. My own essays have been recognized with a Pushcart Prize nomination and selection for Best American Essays, and I have tutored students from middle school through college on academic and personal essays, including college admissions essays.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, where I taught undergraduate creative writing and studied fiction at an advanced level. My own fiction has been published in EPOCH and in Where Handstands Surprise Us: Best of the Bean Street Reading Series, and I have extensive experience editing literary fiction as Managing Editor of Southern Indiana Review and as founder and editor of The Edward Society Prose Magazine. I work with fiction writers on the full range of craft concerns — structure, voice, point of view, pacing, dialogue, and revision — and understand the difference between fixing what's on the page and helping a writer understand why it matters. Whether you're working on a short story, a novel, or just trying to find your footing as a fiction writer, I bring both serious craft knowledge and genuine enthusiasm for the work.
