I'm a biologist and environmental scientist with a B.S. with Honors in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from UC Santa Cruz and an M.S. in Natural Resource and Environmental Management from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, where my graduate focus was applied terrestrial ecology. My academic background includes biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, plant and animal physiology, soil science, conservation biology, biostatistics, and environmental science. I grew up in Hawai'i and have always been drawn to the natural world, and my career has allowed me to work with both terrestrial and marine ecosystems throughout the islands, including native forest restoration, endangered Hawaiian plant propagation, aquaculture, and coral reef conservation. I also enjoy volunteering with ecological conservation groups.

I have significant experience teaching, mentoring, and explaining science to others. I have led hands-on aquaponics workshops for public school students, teachers, and parents, trained adults in agricultural and aquaculture systems, mentored at-risk high school students in science-based learning, trained employees in technical and scientific procedures, and regularly communicated complex environmental topics to community members and professional audiences.

My tutoring approach is focused on understanding rather than memorization. I like to break complicated ideas into clear steps, use real-world examples, and adjust my explanations until the concept clicks for the student. I especially enjoy helping students see how biology and environmental science connect to the natural systems around them. I am well suited to high school and introductory college biology, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, ecology, evolution, conservation biology, plant biology, and related life science subjects.

Ecology

I hold a B.S. with Honors in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from UC Santa Cruz and an M.S. in Natural Resource and Environmental Management from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, with a graduate focus in applied terrestrial ecology. My coursework and research included ecology, evolution, conservation biology, restoration ecology, freshwater ecology, plant physiology, biometry, and the study of ecosystem degradation. I have extensive real-world ecological experience conducting plant community surveys, working with native and endangered Hawaiian plants, managing invasive species, restoring natural systems, and contributing to marine and terrestrial conservation projects. I enjoy making ecological concepts intuitive by connecting topics such as populations, communities, ecosystems, evolution, biodiversity, and human impacts to examples from natural systems I have studied and worked in.
