About Mike

Bio

I am passionate about tutoring Math, pretty much all courses from Algebra 1 all the way to Calculus BC, including SAT/ACT Math prep. I graduated Mechanical Engineering in 2011, where I succeeded in 7 courses of Math (culminating with Partial Differential Equations). In 2012 I moved to USA and I have been tutoring ever since, in parallel with my career in aerospace engineering. I enjoy the relational aspect of tutoring very much, seeing how the student "gets it", and how his/her critical thinking skills are challenged and then expanded (this is also very much why I did not jump in the online tutoring business). My central teaching philosophy is always train for thorough understanding because grades will always follow the level of comprehension. Therefore, I don't jump straight to the solution, I invite the student to treat each Math problem like an engineering project, to analyze the inputs, constraints, and desired outputs, assumed and inferred relations, and examine possible solution pathways, and verify the solution.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have passionately helped students for more than a decade to improve their grades, their confidence and their mathematical reasoning skills. Specifically with respect to ACT Math, I most recently helped a student improve her score from 27 to 33 (out of a scale of 36). When it comes to standardized prep, I have two broad strategies based on the available prep time: if time budget is limited, I explore with the student several sample ACT math tests, reviewing and addressing the concepts behind any missed questions, and then focusing on the timed aspect of the examination; if more time is available, I employ additional teaching resources (besides the sample ACT tests) to address in more detail any knowledge gaps.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the first more serious course in Math and the student's experience in the course sets him/her for future success (or not). Therefore, I always seek to show an additional layer of empathy with the student, while chugging along through the subjects. Complications typically arise when the students do not have a good foundation in prealgebra, so I seek to clear those hurdles - preferably in advance (when I have the time budget) or on the go.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is building upon Algebra 1, and I noticed that students who struggle with Algebra 2 are missing out on some core Algebra 1 (or maybe even Prealgebra) concepts. If time allows this is my first priority - to evaluate the student's knowledge base. I then tackle topic by topic, depending on student's level and his/her available time budget. I always seek to tie complex topics to basic ones - I call this "the divide and conquer strategy", and I get to apply it often in this course.
Calculus

Calculus

If your child made it to this course, it means that he/she is probably planning to go into a math-heavy college program, like Engineering or a science major. I am aware firsthand what it means to struggle in the first year of Calculus in college - it really is a course meant to "weed out" students by the end of the first year, so I put a lot of dedication when I tutor Calculus students.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is my "first love" in Mathematics - it's what initially got me passionate about math. I had the blessing many years ago to have a teacher who was very competent at her job and explained the core concepts in a structured and logical way. Her disciplined approach inspired me to be disciplined and to take pride in my own homework assignments. One time, when she saw my homework assignment, she simply remarked "Wow, you really are enjoying this". That remark is what inspired me the confidence that I needed to embark on a lifetime of math learning. My goal as a Geometry tutor is to inspire the same confidence to your child, to help him/her get past any conceptual hurdles and to see that, unlike other math subjects which may seem more abstract, geometry is the most relatable subject, and therefore the most approachable. Let's go!
Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

I graduated in 2011 with a Mechanical Engineering degree from University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada). In 2012 I obtained the Fundamentals of Engineering certification after passing an 8-hour exam which tested the breadth of my general engineering knowledge and the depth of my knowledge specific to the Mechanical Engineering discipline. Sine 2013 I have worked in aerospace in various mechanical design and manufacturing roles. I have been tutoring students in Math courses for 10+ years, but occasionally I tutor students in Physics or in entry level ME courses (primarily Statics or Dynamics).
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have been tutoring Precalculus a lot since 2023, when it was approved by the College Board as an AP course. It is a pivotal course for students who want to go into STEM careers or who want to subsequently pursue the Calculus course. Due to its relative complexity, I typically employ multiple ways of emphasizing the same concept - I use graphs and analytical models in parallel. My goal as a tutor is always to teach not just how to solve a particular problem, but how to reason mathematically and how to approach a problem which may seem complex initially.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have passionately helped students for more than a decade to improve their grades, their confidence and their mathematical reasoning skills. Specifically with respect to SAT Math, I have two broad strategies based on the available prep time: if time budget is limited, I explore with the student several sample SAT math tests, reviewing and addressing the concepts behind any missed questions, and then focusing on the timed aspect of the examination; if more time is available, I employ additional teaching resources (besides the sample SAT tests) to address in more detail any knowledge gaps.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a blend of geometry and algebra, which provides ample opportunity to optimize the learning process. A lot of things can be derived from more fundamental concepts (like the Pythagorean identity), so this is a skill which I actively seek to instill in my students (and which trust me, it will come very handy in future courses). I also have a great system of teaching students all the special angles from the unit circle which relies only on three ratios.
