I have spent most of my adult life teaching, and what I still enjoy most is the moment when a student who has been struggling with something suddenly sees how it fits together. I currently teach humanities and philosophy at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College, and I hold a Ph.D. in philosophy of education. Before Georgia State, I taught high-school English in Georgia and spent ten years teaching philosophy, literature, and writing at Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea. I have also tutored privately for many years and owned and operated a K–12 tutoring center in Johns Creek.

I work primarily with students in U.S. and world history, English, essay writing, AP coursework, and verbal test preparation. I especially enjoy helping students with the things that often make humanities courses difficult: understanding a complicated reading, figuring out what a question is really asking, organizing an argument, using evidence well, working through DBQs and timed essays, and turning a rough idea into clear writing. Years of teaching students with very different backgrounds have taught me that difficult material usually becomes manageable once it is explained clearly and approached in the right order.

My style is patient, straightforward, and structured. I do not believe in lowering expectations, but I also do not believe every student needs the same kind of help. Sometimes a student needs a concept explained differently; sometimes they need more structure or practice; and sometimes they simply need someone to slow things down and help them see what they already know. I want students to improve their grades and do well on exams, of course, but I also want them to leave tutoring as stronger readers, writers, and thinkers than when we started.

Essay Writing

Essay Writing

Writing has been central to my teaching throughout my career. I began as a high-school English teacher and later spent ten years at Sungkyunkwan University teaching American literature and composition. I now teach university humanities courses and work privately with students on analytical essays, research papers, AP writing, timed responses, and college applications. I help students clarify what they want to say, organize the argument, use evidence effectively, and express their ideas in clear prose.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I have many years of experience tutoring SAT/ACT verbal preparation and teaching reading-intensive humanities courses. I began my career teaching high-school English and later spent ten years at Sungkyunkwan University teaching American literature and composition; I now teach philosophy and critical thinking at Georgia State University. My work has always required close reading, interpretation, vocabulary in context, argument analysis, and distinguishing what a text actually says from what a reader assumes it says. For SAT Reading, I help students slow down, read strategically, identify what a question is really asking, and choose answers that are supported by the passage rather than merely plausible.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

I began my career teaching high-school English and later spent ten years at Sungkyunkwan University teaching American literature and composition. Writing, grammar, argument, and careful use of language remain central to my university teaching and to my private SAT/ACT tutoring. I help students recognize problems with sentence structure, usage, punctuation, organization, transitions, and rhetorical effectiveness rather than simply memorize rules. My goal is to help students understand why one choice works better than another so that the skills carry beyond the test itself.
United States History

United States History

I hold a B.A. in Philosophy with a minor in History and have many years of experience teaching and tutoring humanities, including AP U.S. History. I work with students on historical reasoning, primary-source analysis, causation, comparison, continuity and change, and evidence-based writing, including SAQs, LEQs, and DBQs. Much of my university teaching has also involved designing historically organized humanities courses from the ground up—selecting readings, structuring material across periods, developing lectures and assignments, and building assessments around the larger intellectual arc of the course. I try to help students see U.S. history not as a collection of isolated names and dates, but as a connected story of ideas, institutions, conflicts, and change over time.
World History

World History

I hold a B.A. in Philosophy with a minor in History and have extensive experience tutoring AP World History and AP U.S. History. I work with students on historical reasoning, primary-source analysis, causation, comparison, continuity and change, and AP-style evidence-based writing. Over the course of my university career, I have also designed and taught courses tracing the history of ideas through the ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern periods. That combination of AP tutoring and university course design helps me teach history as a connected story across periods and civilizations rather than as a collection of isolated facts.
