Hello my name is Carol. I am currently Highly Qualified in Special Education (specifically in Behavior Disorders) and Early Childhood Education. I retired after teaching for 25 years and began tutoring students with and without learning differences in piano, clarinet, reading, math, science, and social studies. Over the course of 25 years I have taught and worked with students with emotional disorders, autism, mental retardation, Learning Disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and with physical/orthopedic challenges. I believe that it is most important to learn what motivates the student, and to determine how they best learn and what his or her strengths and weaknesses are to structure achievable learning tasks to reach goals and objectives. I have always enjoyed working and learning with students. Recently I volunteered and substituted at a special needs school for children with learning differences.

Music is also one of my loves. I have found music to be very useful as a tool in my teaching career and have utilized it on numerous occasions to facilitate learning. I have an undergraduate degree in Music Therapy and clarinet was my primary instrument. I have played the clarinet for over 50 years and am actively involved in playing clarinet in a community band and viola in a community orchestra. I have taught private lessons in clarinet, piano, and guitar. Music is crucial to other learning (academic and social skills) as well as providing lifelong enjoyment.

ADHD

I am Highly Qualified in Special Education (Behavior Disordered) in Georgia. I've taught students in resource and self contained classrooms(Emotionally Disturbed/Autism) - students who were labeled as ADD/ADHD among them for 25 years. Recently I retired although currently I am volunteering/substituting at a special needs school for students with ADD/ADHD. When I work with all students and especially students demonstrating characteristics of ADHD I try to incorporate hands on activities, visual supports - for behavior and academics, time management strategies, and opportunities to move. I am currently tutoring an ADD/ADHD student whom I've been working with for the last four year years on various skills including social skills, piano, reading, expressive language, writing, and math.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am High Qualified in Special Education (Specifically Behavior Disorders). Overall I taught for 25 years and have retired. For 8 years I specifically taught students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in a psychoeducational and public school environment. I worked with students from primary through high school in one to one, small and larger groups. After retiring I taught several students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and substituted at Cloverleaf School of Atlanta which included students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. When working with students with autism spectrum disorders basic skills are directly taught (larger tasks are broken into smaller tasks) visuals are highly relied upon, expectations and a schedule of what is to happen is clearly communicated. Keeping language simple when giving directions to a student is also important depending on the verbal skills of the student.
