About Magnia

My passion is middle and high school science teaching, which I currently do at a small private school. I have also worked at a literacy center so I am able to blend that knowledge with my teaching and tutoring. I have a strong mathematics background because of my degrees in chemistry and pharmacy. I have been tutoring since I was an undergraduate student - that was over 20 years ago! I'm very direct and honest with students about their abilities and potential. I believe that learners should know their strengths as well as their areas for improvement. I love to use weird topics that connect with subjects to make the learning experience more memorable.

Most of the mathematics I use on a daily basis is the prerequisite knowledge for algebra. A strong ability in mental mathematics is important for science learning, so I am always challenging my students with science problems that integrate mathematics.

I have worked in several science disciplines so I know how to pull what students know in one subject into another to help them make connections.

Much of the work I did as a college professor involved writing and speaking. I also assigned a lot of writing assignments and presentations in my classes so that my students could gain more practice with writing and public speaking.

If you are looking to become a stronger student overall but are having trouble in a particular subject or two, I am the tutor you want. If you're willing to work hard, I will be in your corner 100%.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

Grammar

I have prior tutor and teaching experience in this area. My experience includes writing and grammar. I have tutored and taught students at the pre-college and college level.

Physical Science

I have a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, for which knowledge of physical science is required. I have taught and tutored this subject for over five years. I use hands-on and technology methods to help students master this subject.

Prealgebra

I integrate computation and mental mathematics daily in teaching science at the middle school level. I have tutored students in this subject to reinforce weak math skills or provide enrichment experiences. I also use projects and other hands-on activities to build student competency.

Vocabulary

I have a strong vocabulary background due to my academic background. I also took Latin which is the basis for many words that we use in the English language. It is also the basis of many scientific and medical terms which I have encountered in my professional experience.
