Bio

I’m Ian. I tutor economics, math, statistics, and econometrics, plus the tools that tend to come with them (Stata/R/Python and GIS). I’ve spent enough time in academia to collect a PhD and four master’s degrees across Georgia Tech, Indiana University, and the Barcelona School of Economics, plus a B.A. in Economics from UNC Chapel Hill with summer study at LSE. I mention that not to hang certificates on the wall, but to say: I know what it feels like to stare at a model and wonder why it...

I mention that not to hang certificates on the wall, but to say: I know what it feels like to stare at a model and wonder why it exists, and I know how to make it make sense.

I work with a wide range of students and professionals: parents supporting AP and homeschool students, undergrads who need a rescue mission (or want to get ahead), MBA/MPP students, graduate and PhD students, and working professionals using these skills on the job. I’ve taught or supported courses through Georgia Tech, Duke Fuqua, IU Bloomington, and Campus.edu, so I’ve seen the common traps in the curriculum and the ones that are unique to your instructor’s style. My sessions are structured and efficient. We diagnose exactly where the logic breaks down, rebuild the foundation, and practice the high-yield moves until you can do it independently. I’m direct, I’m patient, and I’ll tell you honestly what we can accomplish in one session.

If you’re deep in the trenches of research, I also offer hands-on “shadow advising” to get projects unstuck. That can mean refining your question, choosing an empirical strategy, debugging Stata/R/Python, or making spatial work behave in QGIS/ArcGIS. The goal is a workflow that runs, results you can explain, and writing and figures that look like they belong in a serious paper.

Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have more than 10 years of experience in advanced quantitative research, including econometrics and policy analysis, which rely heavily on linear algebra. Additionally, I’ve taught economics, econometrics, and engineering courses involving linear algebra at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Indiana University—Bloomington.
Macroeconomics

Macroeconomics

I have a Ph.D. In economics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where I’ve taught macroeconomics for multiple semesters. My work in international trade theory and public policy involve advanced macroeconomic modeling, including dynamic programming and factor models, growth models, and detailed analysis of monetary and fiscal policy responses to economic and political shocks. I also have two additional masters degrees in economics (Georgia Tech and Indiana University—Bloomington), as well as a masters in public policy from the Barcelona School of Economics.
Martial Arts

Martial Arts

I've been incredibly fortunate to have spent 12+ years immersed in the world of martial arts, starting at a young age and dedicating myself to consistent training. While I've had the honor of achieving black belts in multiple disciplines, including Sin Moo Hapkido, TaeKwonDo, and Shotokan Karate, and even enjoyed some success in tournaments, I truly believe the greatest rewards have been the personal growth and discipline that have come through practice and instruction. My main focus now is to gently share the knowledge and skills I've been so lucky to learn, hopefully helping others discover their own strength and capabilities through martial arts. I am particularly adept at teaching mental control; the use and mastery of joint manipulation, body control, and movement methods from HapKiDo; as well as improvisational situation-specific self defense techniques.

Excellent Teacher

Ian is an excellent tutor in microeconomics, as well as, engineering economics. He has been able to simplify complex concepts, and he is patience in working through problems. Ian has been a great help and influence in building my son’s confidence and knowledge in his studies. In a recent session they worked on perpetuities and how they form the foundation of capitalized cost problems…like maintaining a bridge forever. Ian has been a positive and supportive teacher. We highly recommend him.

Knowledgable and adaptive tutor

Ian was incredibly patient and went through all the material from a logical standpoint which I asked for. He also connected it to really interesting theories, and real life ideas that helped me continue to see the beauty in macroeconomics and have fun with the challenge in problems.

Best Economics Tutor We've Found – Highly Recommend!

Ian has been phenomenal in helping my 17-year-old son with his honors economics class. We've tried several tutors, but Ian stood out by explaining complex concepts in clear, simple terms that really resonated. My son mentioned multiple times that Ian makes economics easy to grasp, which has dramatically boosted his understanding and confidence. If you're looking for someone who can break down difficult economic topics effortlessly, Ian is your tutor!

Unit 1 AP Microeconomics

We have been reviewing material from Unit 1 in preparation for the AP Microeconomics test in May and reteaching material from an extended classroom teacher's absence. So far, the lessons have been going really well and my daughter is getting more and more confident in her understanding of concepts.
