With nearly seven years of experience and a dual degree from East Carolina University in English and Secondary Education, I have transitioned to one-on-one tutoring to provide the individualized instruction that classroom settings often lack. As a certified teacher who has taught every high school level, including three years of AP English Literature and Composition with an 86% pass rate, I know that true breakthroughs happen when we teach the individual person, not the average of a group.
My process generally begins with a diagnostic assessment of a student’s skills, interests, and goals. In ELA, engagement is paramount; I connect challenging literary concepts and writing prompts to a student’s unique passions, transforming what too often feels like jumping through academic "hoops" into relevant, purposeful learning. Whether the goal is closing foundational gaps or mastering essay structure, I provide a data-driven strategy to ensure we prioritize the areas that will yield the most significant academic growth. For standardized test prep specifically, I cross-check released exams against current versions to identify the most frequently tested standards, ensuring we prioritize the specific question types that will yield the highest results.
This one-on-one environment allows for immediate, specific feedback that fosters a student’s authentic voice as well as an educational experience uniquely tailored to each student. By moving beyond the repetitive nature of standard curricula, I create a learning experience that is intellectually rigorous without being overwhelming. My goal is to replace frustration with intrinsic motivation, helping high school students bridge skill gaps and develop a genuine, lasting confidence in their own academic strengths.
