I've also been an academic coach for 3 years, helping students from high school through grad school improve their executive function skills, academic performance, and confidence. For the past 3 years I've been a Principal Tutor and academic coach with Signet Education in Cambridge, MA.
Simply put, I love teaching, care deeply for my students, and work hard to meet them where they're at, formulate goals and devise plans together, and do everything I can to help them succeed. I pride myself on tailoring my tutoring to each individual student, diagnosing their challenges and weaknesses, and strategically designing lessons to address them. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, creative, and confidence-building (and that's just the "C"s!).

Ear Training

Ear Training

I have played guitar for 25+ years, played piano for 15+ years, and have sung in choirs and a soloist for 20+ years. My undergraduate music major included a lot of ear training, as did my teaching during grad school and since. Most recently (Fall 2022) I taught the ear training course for incoming music PhD's at Harvard University.
Music History

Music History

As an undergraduate, I took courses on Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern classical music. I have taught a History of Western Music survey at Brandeis University and Boston College. My Harvard Summer School course, "Fundamentals of Music," which I've been teaching for 7 years, also includes a good deal of music history, including the history of jazz and rock and roll.

Amazing teacher!

Andy is one of the most patient and kind teachers I know! He is also very knowledgeable and he helps you understand difficult concepts in music theory. He is always open to answering questions. He will help broaden your perspective in music analysis and music theory. I highly recommend him to be your teacher if you are into music...

Impressed

Andy is an amazing teacher who has the ability to bring mental clarity to complex educational issues. His teaching style has given me a fresh perspective, and within just a few lessons, I have gained a wealth of knowledge. Honestly, I couldn't be more impressed with his teaching methods. My perspective more based on personal feelings and opinion rather than traditional feedback. I think that Andy is a really cool and interesting person. I am naturally curious about anything he shares with me. I think it's an awesome thing to enjoy time with a teacher while learning genuinely. I found a unique trait that Andy and I share: He is reassuring and compassionate about the answers I got wrong on the practice test and uses failure as an effective learning tool, unlike teachers or people in general, who often have a sassy attitude when correcting/teaching someone.  Embrace the pursuit of academic wisdom. Let Andy be your guide.
