I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Georgia Tech, where coursework and lab work gave me a solid, practical understanding of general and organic chemistry. During my time there, I also co-authored a paper published in the journal Synthesis as second author, which meant collaborating with a research team, troubleshooting real experiments, and learning to explain complex chemical reasoning clearly to students. That experience of translating dense material into something understandable is the same skill I bring into tutoring. I also scored a 130 on the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section of the MCAT, placing in the 96th percentile, reflecting the depth of chemistry knowledge I bring to helping students prepare for coursework and exams.
My teaching experience comes from serving as a Supplemental Instruction leader for General Chemistry 1 for a semester. I led regular group sessions for first-year students working through concepts that trip up so many new chemistry students: stoichiometry, thermodynamics, atomic structure, and bonding. Rather than re-lecturing, I ran sessions around active problem-solving, having students work through practice problems together, talk through their reasoning aloud, and correct misconceptions in real time. I found students learn chemistry best through guided practice questions and peer discussion over straight lecture.
I tutor a range of levels, from high school chemistry through college general and organic chemistry, and I tailor my approach to the student; for those strong on memorization but weak on the conceptual "why," I build intuition with visuals and real-world analogies. For those who understand concepts but struggle with execution, I emphasize repetition and worked problems until the process becomes automatic. My goal in every session is the same: help the student leave more confident and less dependent on me than when we started.
