I hold a Ph.D. in Criminology, Law and Society from George Mason University and a Master of Public Health from Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, both of which required extensive academic writing across research proposals, peer-reviewed manuscripts, grant applications, and policy reports. My writing has been published in journals including Injury Epidemiology and presented at national and international conferences. Translating complex ideas into clear, well-structured prose is central to my professional work, and I bring that same skill set to helping others develop as writers.

I have been teaching at the college level for over five years across a range of settings — large in-person lectures, asynchronous online courses, and small hybrid seminars. As an Assistant Professor, I currently teach undergraduate students in courses that require substantial writing, including research-based essays, policy analyses, and reflective assignments. I have also served as a teaching assistant at both Emory University and George Mason University, where I provided written and verbal feedback on student work in graduate and undergraduate courses alike. My approach centers on helping writers understand the purpose behind each component of their writing — the argument, the evidence, the transitions — rather than simply correcting surface-level errors.

My tutoring style is collaborative and student-centered. I work to understand where a writer is in their process before offering guidance, whether that means brainstorming a thesis, restructuring a draft, or refining tone and clarity. I have worked with undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-traditional adult learners from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds, including students with limited prior writing instruction. I am comfortable supporting writers at any stage, from a blank page to a nearly finished draft.

Approved Subjects

Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice

I hold a Ph.D. in Criminology, Law and Society, where my research focused on school shootings, firearm violence, and the health consequences of mass violence. I am currently an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology, where I teach undergraduate courses in criminology, school violence, and family violence, giving me direct experience explaining core criminal justice concepts to students at varying levels of preparation. My research is interdisciplinary, bridging criminal justice and public health, and I have worked alongside law enforcement agencies, emergency departments, and federal research partners on projects spanning policing, violence prevention, and substance use among justice-involved populations. This combination of classroom teaching and active scholarship means I can support students whether they are grappling with foundational theory, research methods, or more specialized topics within the field.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have been teaching and supporting writers at the college level for over five years, working with undergraduate and graduate students in both classroom and one-on-one settings across in-person, online, and hybrid formats. As an Assistant Professor, I regularly assign and evaluate research-based essays, policy analyses, and analytical writing, and I provide detailed feedback aimed at helping students strengthen their arguments, improve their organization, and develop their academic voice. My own writing experience spans peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, grant applications, and policy reports, which gives me a broad sense of the conventions and expectations across different essay forms and audiences. Whether a student is working on a first draft or refining a nearly finished piece, I focus on helping them understand the reasoning behind strong writing rather than simply correcting what is on the page.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I have over six years of experience supporting students through the personal statement process, spanning formal roles as a college preparatory advisor and college success advisor, where I guided students through application writing from initial brainstorming through final drafts. In these positions, I worked with students across a range of ages and academic stages, helping them identify their most compelling experiences and translate them into clear, authentic narratives. Beyond my formal advising roles, I have mentored younger students one-on-one and edited graduate school application essays, giving me familiarity with the distinct expectations of both undergraduate and graduate admissions writing. I understand how to help writers find their voice while also meeting the structural and rhetorical demands that make personal statements effective.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I completed both a master's thesis and a doctoral dissertation during my graduate training, giving me firsthand experience navigating the full arc of long-form academic research writing — from developing a focused research question through literature review, methodology, analysis, and final defense. Beyond my own work, I have informally mentored undergraduate and master's-level students through their thesis writing process, helping them structure their arguments, work through methodological sections, and maintain momentum across a project that spans months. My background in both quantitative and qualitative research methods means I can support students across disciplines when it comes to the analytical and writing demands of thesis work. I am familiar with the particular challenges thesis writing presents — the scope, the iterative revision process, and the pressure of producing original scholarly work — and I approach mentoring with that context in mind.
