I am a retired teacher who spent forty-five years teaching all ages. (not that old...I just began teaching right out of UGA at the age of 20!!) My first degree prepared me for kindergarten through grade four (primary/elementary ages) Teacher trainings were very valuable and filled my pockets with "teacher tools", like Corrective Reading/Math (SRA Programs). I earned my master's degree in Specific Learning Disabilities and Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, and I began working with students with IEPs to help these students achieve educational goals. Reading trainings included SUCCESS Reading and Wilson Reading work. I have also been working with Orton-Gillingham students. Moving to middle school level, I instructed students in the Language Arts area as well as math. I participated in inclusion classes to provide instruction. I moved into the high school area and continued working with students to meet goals for graduation and prepare for attending colleges and tech schools. At this level, my focus area was English and Literature.
Retiring from public schools in 2008, I began teaching high school English and music. I provided extra support for students who needed reteaching and practice to master skills. I taught in private schools for fifteen years. Now, I am retired.
As a tutor, I enjoy working remotely one-on-one with students. I find a way for us to connect to put the student at ease. I work to encourage him/her and to increase confidence in weak areas. I listen to the students. I observe strengths in order to match instruction type to the learner. Nothing pleases me more than to witness success of my students! With valuable classroom experience and many "tools", I feel that I am prepared to be a difference maker for many students!

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

From kindergarten - 12th grade, I have worked with students individually, in small group, in the regular classroom with ADHD. I have been a part of the team to write and apply 504 plans for these students. As a behavior specialist, I have observed ADHD students in classroom settings and provided interventions for teachers to use to encourage success. As an online tutor, I plan my lesson so that students with attention issues have quick changes of activity from the "work" to a game-type practice format to help with attention- plus break times for movement.
Clarinet

Clarinet

I am a clarinet player for 9 years through school and was accepted into the UGA School of Music on clarinet. During high school, I sat first chair clarinet from 9th - 12th grades at the District Honor Band held at Georgia Southern College. My professor of clarinet was Dr. Theodore Jann at UGA. I played in the UGA concert band under Roger Danz, Director of the concert band at UGA and well-known director of the UGA Redcoat Band.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

As part of my teaching in elementary and middle school years, I did teach math at various grade levels---both gifted students in math as well as remedial students in math. I also was trained in Corrective Math (SRA).
Grammar

Grammar

Early in my teaching career, I taught English in elementary school. As I moved up levels, I also taught English in middle and high schools. During my private school teaching years, I taught 9th-12th Literature and Grammar for six years. I am also certified as an AP Literature and Comp teacher (certified with class at UGA in 2018).
Music Theory

Music Theory

Charles McCall, a Julliard Graduate, taught me piano for 9 years. I then began college as a music major and keyboarding was part of my curriculum. I was encouraged to become a piano major, but I did not. I took theory classes and did well in them at UGA as a music major. Today, I am a church musician, playing piano and organ.
Phonics

Phonics

Mostly in my teaching career, phonics instruction was a part of lower grades education which I taught. I was also trained in several strong reading programs: DISTAR (SRA), Corrective Reading (SRA)----both focused on phonics. I am also working with students in the Wilson Reading Program as well as the Orton Gillingham Approach. Another reading program that I have seen help students is the SUCCESS Reading Program. I was fortunate to be able to receive these trainings as a teacher.
Reading

Reading

During my elementary teacher years, I received numerous trainings which focused on phonics; however, I also received training in the SRA Comprehension Reading program which is wonderful! Since that time, I have taught students in grades first through twelfth grade. Teaching reading comprehension is a part of reading at every level. I am also AP certified for Literature and Comp.
Writing

Writing

Throughout my teaching career, I have instructed students at elementary, middle, and high school level in English. The writing process is a part of that curriculum. Writing is a part of every grade level ...so as the writer grows, the writing tasks increase in difficulty and expectations with the writer. I have been able to successfully teach many students at various levels how to write. I have been fortunate to have several high school students who became excellent writers based on performances on the AP Lit and Comp exam as well as performances in writing at Literary Competitions.
