I am a retired teacher who spent forty-five years teaching all ages. (not that old...I just began teaching right out of UGA at the age of 20!!) My first degree prepared me for kindergarten through grade four (primary/elementary ages) Teacher trainings were very valuable and filled my pockets with "teacher tools", like Corrective Reading/Math (SRA Programs). I earned my master's degree in Specific Learning Disabilities and Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, and I began working with students with IEPs to help these students achieve educational goals. Reading trainings included SUCCESS Reading and Wilson Reading work. I have also been working with Orton-Gillingham students. Moving to middle school level, I instructed students in the Language Arts area as well as math. I participated in inclusion classes to provide instruction. I moved into the high school area and continued working with students to meet goals for graduation and prepare for attending colleges and tech schools. At this level, my focus area was English and Literature.
Retiring from public schools in 2008, I began teaching high school English and music. I provided extra support for students who needed reteaching and practice to master skills. I taught in private schools for fifteen years. Now, I am retired.
As a tutor, I enjoy working remotely one-on-one with students. I find a way for us to connect to put the student at ease. I work to encourage him/her and to increase confidence in weak areas. I listen to the students. I observe strengths in order to match instruction type to the learner. Nothing pleases me more than to witness success of my students! With valuable classroom experience and many "tools", I feel that I am prepared to be a difference maker for many students!
