About Peter

I am a semi-retired foreign language teacher: Spanish, German, French and Latin, with 40 successful years of teaching experience. I am presently adjunct college instructor in Spanish. I am a native speaker of German with a MATL (Master of Arts in Teaching Language) degree in Spanish and a doctoral degree in linguistics. I have also studied several Amerindian languages while living in Mexico. I have extensive foreign travel, so I can not only teach you the language, but also relate it to the culture.

Philosophy of Education

To be human means to communicate using spoken language. I have traveled to many foreign countries and therefore have experienced first-hand the value of being proficient in other languages. Expert teachers have strong content knowledge and a passion about the language of instruction. My teaching philosophy stresses authenticity, teaching students about customs in other cultures as well as by providing meaningful, relevant information that learners can apply in a real-world setting. Through focusing on practical vocabulary words and expressions that the students are likely to use when communicating with native speakers as well as encouraging them to develop a near-native articulation, my students are better able to take the language skills they have acquired in the classroom and make use of them in a community setting.

Expert teachers create a positive learning environment where learners feel comfortable and eager to absorb new material. The teacher should be a positive role model and should encourage diversity and the acceptance of differences. It is important that educators be conscious of the fact that students learn more from their teacher than simply the subject matter being taught.

Students should be challenged to do their best work and should be taught slightly above their current level of ability. However, they should not be pushed beyond their capabilities, but should be encouraged to obtain their individual best levels of achievement.

It is the responsibility of teachers to prepare the students of today for the ever competitive and changing world of tomorrow. The ability to communicate proficiently and effectively in another language and through the lens of another culture gives the student a practical advantage over those who do not have this expertise.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a doctoral degree in linguistic anthropology, with a specialization in phonetics.

English

I have a doctoral degree in linguistics with a concentration specifically in phonology. However, I am also competent in the morphology, syntax and semantics as well as the transactional analysis in several languages. Basically, I can "read between the lines," then construct a cogent response on any topic. Whenever I lack any readily available empirical data, I will research the topic and find the support needed for my position.

ESL/ESOL

I have a doctoral degree in linguistics and I have taught various languages for 40 years. As department chair of foreign languages and ESOL, I have assisted in the preparation and implementation of the ESL/ESOL curriculum. I was involved with the testing of new students as well as teaching the advanced level classes in English as a Second Language.

European History

One of my favored subjects in college was history. As a professor of languages, it is important to know the history and culture of the people whose languages I have taught. I have traveled extensively and have worked as a tourist guide in Europe, North Africa, Mexico, and Latin America. My job as a guide included explaining historic facts to various groups of tourist from many nations.

Geography

I have taught languages and cultures for almost 40 years. Teaching languages also involves the teaching of the geography of the regions where the languages are spoken. Additionally, I travel frequently and I have worked as a tour guide in Europe and in Mexico. It is necessary to know geography in order to be a successful tour guide. Geography has always been a favorite subject of mine.

German

I am a native speaker of German. I have taught the language for 31 years, from beginning to advanced levels.

Grammar

I have taught various languages for over 35 years. My dissertation for the doctoral degree in linguistics discussed the phonological variants within the Uto-Aztecan languages. However, I am also prepared to work at the morphological, syntactical and semantic levels of languages, including English.

Literature

Some of my favorite authors, whose works I have read entirely, are Daniel Peters, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Edgar Allan Poe, Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Kurt Vonnegut and Gore Vidal.

Proofreading

I have taught various languages for over 35 years. My dissertation for the doctoral degree in linguistics discussed the phonological variants within the Uto-Aztecan languages. However, I am also prepared to work with all aspects of grammar, from the morphological to the syntactical and semantic levels of several languages, including English.

Psychology

I have a BS degree in psychology in addition to other advanced degrees in linguistics, Spanish and curriculum and instruction.

Public Speaking

I have a doctoral degree in linguistics and therefore have the knowledge and experience in and with the phonology (pronunciation and accent), morphology (grammar), and syntax of several languages. I have been teaching classes at the secondary and university level in various languages for almost 40 years.

SAT Writing

I have assisted in the design of various national exams including the German, French and Spanish National Exams. I have also worked with other teachers to create the teacher certification test in Georgia. I now work part-time as an evaluator for the Educational Testing Service.

Spanish

I have taught foreign languages in the public schools in Georgia for 38 years, including Spanish, German, French and Latin. I travel frequently to Europe and Latin America to ensure my fluency in those languages.

TOEFL

I learned English as a foreign language before coming to teach in Georgia over 30 years ago. During my teaching career, I have taught classes in various languages, including ESOL.

World History

I am interested in other cultures, as demonstrated by my advanced degree in anthropological linguistics. This naturally includes the history and culture of any given community of speakers. My favorite free-time reading is always something from history, e.g., a comparison of the American, French and Russian revolutions, the Borgia papacy of the late 15th/early 16th century, the structure of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations, Marco Polo's adventures in China, and most recently, the empire of the Incas before the arrival of the Spanish.

Writing

I have taught various languages for almost 40 years and in the time period, I have helped many students with the written and spoken forms with not only a foreign language, but also with their own native language.
