I am a semi-retired foreign language teacher: Spanish, German, French and Latin, with 40 successful years of teaching experience. I am presently adjunct college instructor in Spanish. Philosophy of Education

To be human means to communicate using spoken language. I have traveled to many foreign countries and therefore have experienced first-hand the value of being proficient in other languages. Expert teachers have strong content knowledge and a passion about the language of instruction. My teaching philosophy stresses authenticity, teaching students about customs in other cultures as well as by providing meaningful, relevant information that learners can apply in a real-world setting. Through focusing on practical vocabulary words and expressions that the students are likely to use when communicating with native speakers as well as encouraging them to develop a near-native articulation, my students are better able to take the language skills they have acquired in the classroom and make use of them in a community setting.

Expert teachers create a positive learning environment where learners feel comfortable and eager to absorb new material. The teacher should be a positive role model and should encourage diversity and the acceptance of differences. It is important that educators be conscious of the fact that students learn more from their teacher than simply the subject matter being taught.

Students should be challenged to do their best work and should be taught slightly above their current level of ability. However, they should not be pushed beyond their capabilities, but should be encouraged to obtain their individual best levels of achievement.

It is the responsibility of teachers to prepare the students of today for the ever competitive and changing world of tomorrow. The ability to communicate proficiently and effectively in another language and through the lens of another culture gives the student a practical advantage over those who do not have this expertise.

My favorite free-time reading is always something from history, e.g., a comparison of the American, French and Russian revolutions, the Borgia papacy of the late 15th/early 16th century, the structure of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations, Marco Polo's adventures in China, and most recently, the empire of the Incas before the arrival of the Spanish.

Good and Flexible

Peter was willing to work with my existing textbook and structure the lessons around my needs. In addition, he was more than happy to meet at my place for the lessons.

Enthusiastic Teacher

As someone who's trying to revitalize his Spanish aptitude, Peter is a wonderful resource for achieving that goal. We spoke for an hour about a multitude of topics and he displayed great enthusiasm for teaching as well as communicating in Spanish in general. I would absolutely recommend Peter to anyone in need of Spanish tutoring!

Great Teacher and Very Patient with my Spanish Class!!

Very professional and fluent in Spanish and helped me get through all my assignments. Very patient with me as I struggled with different words and conjugations and helped me understand in a way that worked for me. I look forward to more lessons.

My teenager said it was worthwhile

First session, my teenager said it was more helpful than a whole week in class. Said Peter was upbeat and kept her attention. Will try more sessions and hopefully grade will improve.

Knowledgeable and enthusiastic

We both enjoy the "organic" manner of teaching, learning words and phrases as they come into our conversations. Also very prepared! The packets of phrases are very helpful to us.

Excellent!

My 16 year old son had fallen substantially behind in Spanishthis semester due to illness Peter worked very effectively with him and in only a small number of sessions his performance improved substantially. I highly recommend him to tutor anyone looking to improve their Spanish ability.

GACE test prep

Peter has been extremely helpful in my preparation for the GACE exam. He is very knowledgeable of many different dialects of Spanish as well as of Latin which helps dramatically when explaining new vocabulary and grammar. He pushes me to be confident and speak only in Spanish, something I definitely need help with. He has many great resources and makes learning a foreign language comfortable and easy.
