Nothing communicates my teaching philosophy more eloquently than this quote. I have been teaching in a wide variety of settings since I graduated from the University of Georgia with my undergraduate degree – as a laboratory assistant, as a high school teacher, as a graduate assistant, as a tutor/mentor for college athletes, as an assistant professor of biology at a small-liberal arts university, and, for the past 27 years, as a biology professor at the University of North Georgia. Regardless of the setting, I have always regarded teaching as a great privilege. Through the years, I have learned that impactful teaching requires dedication, grit, and boundless enthusiasm.
Strong metacognitive skills are essential to student success; therefore, I place a high priority on helping my students to develop these skills. For example, I teach my students effective strategies for reading textbooks and taking notes. I emphasize the importance of using techniques such as spaced repetition and interleaving to prepare for exams. My goal as your tutor is to show you how to transition from “study-mode” to “learn-mode” on your journey to academic success!
