I taught middle school science in Cobb County for twenty-five years. I graduated from Kennesaw State University with a Bachelor of Education in Science and Language Arts, a Masters degree in Science and Math, and Lesley University with a Specialist Degree in Technology. My students and fellow teachers often referred to me as the “hands-on-teacher” because I created lessons that were engaging, challenging, and promoted comprehension. I have always believed that if students could learn to “think for themselves,” they would be able to understand the concepts being taught in class. My goal for your child would be to teach them how to analyze information, think critically, and answer the questions using supporting details.

Although my focus was mainly on Science, I am very comfortable working with students in all areas of academics: Language Arts, Social Studies, and some levels of Math (6th and below). Last year, I tutored four fifth-grade students and two third-grade students in a small-group learning pod. I monitored their progress daily to ensure their success in a virtual learning environment and I worked closely with their individual teachers. Parents were updated daily/weekly with regard to any upcoming projects, tests, or unfinished work in order to promote success.

I'm familiar with almost all areas of science: earth, life, and physical science. I can help your child learn the various parts of speech and teach them how to write paragraphs with supporting details. Or, if needed, I can help them understand basic math and beginning algebra.

I know how difficult it is to work with students with disabilities and those who are struggling to understand concepts that they were unable to grasp in the classroom. I’m willing to work with your schedule and meet at a location convenient to both of us. Whether it be on a long-term basis or just to “catch up”, I look forward to working with you and your student.

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

The "new math" that is being taught in elementary school is extremely different from what we grew up with. I spent the past year working with three fifth graders and two third graders who were struggling with it while in a virtual classroom. I've already gotten it figured out and can show your child how to master the computer programs as well as the lessons.
Phonics,

Phonics

I grew up learning how to spell using phonics. In fact, I still use phonics to pronounce words that are unfamiliar to me. My children and grandchildren grew up learning site words. Albeit, both have their advantages. However, I believe knowing the sounds and pronunciation of consonant blends will enable students to be more successful in higher levels of learning.
Reading,

Reading

The hardest part about reading is understanding what you are supposed to read! I can help your child use word clues to determine the meaning of the word, phonics to pronounce the word correctly, and how to use sight words to become a more fluent reader. I taught reading in middle school for four years and tutored five elementary students last year in a virtual learning pod.

Literature,

Literature

Do you need help understanding what you are reading? Foreshadowing, flashbacks, or distinguishing between metaphors and similes got you down? Can't determine the correct verb tense? Unable to comprehend what the author's trying to say? I LOVE reading and I enjoy teaching students how to understand what the author is trying to convey to you. Let me help you make an "A" in your class!

Astronomy,

Astronomy

Do you need help understanding the difference between geocentric and heliocentric theories, the H-R Diagram, or how a star “is born?” Do you enjoy learning trivia facts to help you remember theories and accomplishments of different astronomers? Did you know that Tycho Brahe, the “Father of Modern Astronomy” had to wear an artificial nose or that Galileo’s “pointing finger” is encased in 24-karat gold? Drop me a note and let me help you understand what you are confused about. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
