I am a certified Spanish teacher with over 25 years experience teaching Spanish I, II, III, IV, and Conversation. I hold a bachelor’s in Int'l Trade/Spanish and a master’s in Spanish education. In addition to my American studies, I have also studied internationally in Spain and Mexico. I even resided in Mexico for a year where I lived independently and communicated with native speakers every day.

As a public school teacher, I worked with both middle and high school students. I found it very rewarding to watch the students grow in their knowledge of the Spanish language, and observe them using it on a regular basis in their daily lives. Many continued their study of Spanish in college, and some even went on to use it in their professional careers.

I have had extensive experience working with adult learners, both privately and through continuing education classes at Emory University. There, one of my roles was to prepare students for the ACTFL exam, a proficiency test that is recognized as the gold standard by many businesses and institutions. Some of my students had no prior knowledge of Spanish at all; 100% of my students passed the ACTFL exam. I also helped develop the curriculum that was used for the Spanish continuing education classes at Emory.

As a longtime teacher, I understand that learning a language can be challenging and that not every student learns in the same way. For that reason, I can tailor activities based on the type of learner (visual, auditory, or interactive/kinesthetic) and can explain concepts in a way that each learner is able to understand.

In addition to individual tutoring, I have also taught formal group classes, online and in person. Whether you are looking for someone to offer individualized support for a current Spanish class or you have no experience with Spanish and want to learn it for personal or professional reasons, I can help. I’m passionate about Spanish; I truly enjoy sharing my knowledge of the language and culture with others.

English

While I don't have a formal degree in English, I grew up with an English professor for a father so I feel like I earned one. Throughout my childhood, I remember being 'educated' constantly, whether my grammar was being corrected or my writing skills were being honed, everything was a teachable moment. While I hated it at the time, I now realize what a gift it was. By the time I was in middle school, I was helping my dad grade and proofread the papers of his college students. And by the time I was in high school, my knowledge of the English language and my writing skills far surpassed those of my peers. I am detail oriented and enjoy sharing my knowledge and love for languages with others. (I'm also fluent in Spanish.)

Proofreading

I have a master's of Education (M.Ed.) in Spanish education as well as a bachelor's degree in International Trade/Spanish. I was also raised by an English professor (who holds a PhD in English) so I feel like I have a degree in that as well, with the constant English grammar and writing lessons I received. I have a good command of both the English and Spanish languages and can explain concepts clearly to students. I am a very detail-oriented person and have a sharp eye, finding errors quickly and offering suggestions to improve one's writing.

Excellent Spanish Tutor!!

Johanna is a great tutor! Spanish 3 is already a tough subject but she was able to break it down so it doesn’t seem too intimidating. My son is a visual learner so her lessons included charts and acronyms which he found easier to learn. She makes sure he understood the process and tricks to find the answers and then confirms with him why he chose that answer to ensure he truly understands. These are great attributes in a tutor. We’re so lucky and grateful to have found Johanna.

Johanna is THE BEST

Johanna is all you need in terms of a Spanish teacher. She is focused, organized and presents the material in a clear and easy-to-understand way. She met my student where she was and helped her understand the grammar underlying the language. She goes through her classwork and homes in on the problem areas, then walks my daughter through the concepts step-by-step. Johanna is obviously a very experienced teacher, and a kind upbeat person. It is a pleasure to have her in my home, and my daughter found success in zoom sessions as well. I've used several tutors over the years for my kids, both from brick-and-mortar companies and from Wyzant. Overall, the Wyzant tutors I've found have been extremely experienced and knowledgeable, and Johanna is the BEST of all of them.
