One of my professors once told me: "I don't think college is supposed to be a few smart people on a campus. This belongs to everyone." That's the basis of how I work with students. My approach starts from one observation: self-doubt hurts academic performance more than lack of ability ever has. Most students already have the answers, there's just some annoying thing standing between them and understanding, whether it's an unclear assignment, an unfamiliar convention, or plain nerves. My job is to help remove that thing.
After ten years, I still get nervous before every tutoring session. To me, it’s not a weakness, but a signal that the work is important. I don't hunt for problems in a draft or make students feel bad about things nobody ever taught them. I help you decode what the assignment is actually asking, build strategies that stick, and revise with purpose. I’ve graded the assignments, and I know what instructors are looking for.
