Hi, I'm Emmet and I have been an educator for more than 10 years, working in both public schools for 9 years and private school for one year. I have my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Georgia State University. I am also certified in Middle Grades Math. In addition to teaching fourth and fifth grade math and science classes for several years, I have also tutored students after school and in the summer for grades 2 through 7 for the past 10 years.
In the classroom, I like to work with small groups of students so that I can differentiate instruction to meet the needs of my students. When tutoring, I usually work in a one-on-one setting so that the student I am working with has my full attention. I believe that learning should be interesting and fun, so I like to begin my lessons with reviewing previously learned objectives in an engaging way, usually by incorporating a quick game. Afterwards, I like to provide explicit instruction by using models and examples, followed by guided practice time where my student and I work together on the material that was just taught. Then I give my student independent practice opportunities where I am able answer questions, see any misconceptions that we can correct, and provide encouragement and feedback. This also helps me to see if a student needs more time on a topic or if they are ready to move on to the next. I have provided tutoring support both in person at a local library, and online, so I have flexibility to meet the different needs of the families I work with.
Once I know the topic a student would like tutoring support with, I will have a lesson plan prepared, but I also welcome parent input on resources and materials that they would like for their student to use.
