My name is Hannah Howell and I am a certified Elementary Education and Special Education online reading teacher. My goal is to create a safe and engaging environment for all of my learners. I tailor each of my Orton-Gillingham-inspired lessons to target personalized next steps for my students.

The phonics sequence that I use in my teaching instruction was created by June Orton. This specific sequence was designed to help students with learning differences have the best chance at reading and writing success. During my lessons, I used a mix of decodable texts and nondecodable texts to give my readers a variety of literature to choose from. I have strategically integrated sight words or "heart words" into the June Orton sequence depending on which skill is being introduced.

I'm cognizant to work with the child first and look at their learning differences second. When I look at my students who have dyslexia I do not see a dyslexic child. I see a child who is fun, silly, smart, capable, loving, inquisitive, motivated, and who also happens to have dyslexia. In addition to dyslexia, I've also worked with other amazing students who have ADHD, Apraxia, and Autism.

Before committing to a tutoring time slot it is important to me that we meet for a free trial lesson. During this trial lesson, I focus on getting to know you as a parent and answering any questions you may have. This time allows for me to get an overview of your child's past year in learning and what your goals are for your child while tutoring. This time also allows for me to meet the child, gain their trust and start to form a teacher-student relationship. During this time I will show the student a variety of my teaching materials and give them a very light assessment to gauge where they are on my learning pathway. If you would like more information please do not hesitate to reach out.

ADHD

ADHD

I have over four years of experience teaching children K-12 with ADHD. I have taught students with ADHD in the school system. I've also tutored students with ADHD. My degree in special educations taught me how to assess where students are at academically, create measurable goals for them, and figure out learning strategies that will help them thrive.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have experience tutoring students on the autism spectrum. I love finding out what students are passionate about and using that to encourage them to learn. Setting personalized goals for my students helps me to track their progress and help them to thrive both academically and social and emotionally. I'm a certified special educator.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I'm a certified special educator who works with students with dyslexia on a daily basis. I love getting to know each of my students and finding out what they are passionate about. I use that passion to get them motivated to learn in the subjects they are struggling in. I plan my lessons so that each child is engaged through their own learning style.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I'm currently a Kindergarten teacher in a general education classroom but I am certified K-5 mainstream and special education.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I am currently a Kindergarten teacher teaching my students from home. I have a degree in education and special education. Growing up I was homeschooled from grades 5th grade -12th grade. I loved the flexibility that homeschool brought to me and would love to bring my knowledge of K-5 education to your family and see how I can help you reach your goals.
Reading

Reading

I have extensive experience teaching evidence-based literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, spelling, and reading comprehension. I specialize in explicit, systematic instruction aligned with structured literacy and Orton-Gillingham–based practices, particularly for students with reading difficulties and dyslexia. My work includes one-on-one tutoring, small-group instruction, and designing targeted interventions that support both decoding and encoding skills. I focus on practical, research-backed strategies that help students become confident, independent readers.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I'm currently teaching mainstream Kindergarten but I have my degree in special education as well. I have loved all of the opportunities that I have had teaching children with autism, dyslexia, ADHD, and down syndrome.
Spelling

Spelling

I have extensive experience teaching spelling through explicit, systematic instruction grounded in structured literacy and Orton-Gillingham–based practices. My approach integrates phonics, syllable types, morphology, and spelling generalizations to help students understand why words are spelled the way they are. I work with a wide range of learners, including students with dyslexia and other learning differences, using multisensory strategies to support strong encoding skills. My goal is to help students become accurate, confident spellers who can apply patterns independently.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I have extensive experience teaching vocabulary through explicit, meaningful instruction that supports both reading comprehension and written expression. I focus on building depth of word knowledge by teaching word meanings, multiple-meaning words, and word relationships using rich discussion and contextual practice. My instruction often incorporates morphology, including prefixes, suffixes, and roots, to help students unlock the meaning of unfamiliar words. I work with diverse learners, including students with learning differences, to develop strong, transferable vocabulary skills.
