I graduated From Mercer University/ Tift College of Education in 2009 earning a dual degree in Elementary Education and Special Education General Curriculum with honors. In 2021 I earned my ESOL Endorsement through Metro Resa.
My subsequent teaching experience for the last 15 years involved working with at-risk students in a multi-grade classroom setting in a secure facility, providing Special Education services. These included Inclusion and Co-Lab classes as well as Separate Classroom settings for students with significant delays and emotional behavior issues. I developed and implemented gradual release lesson plans scaffolded to accommodate the students' learning abilities and levels, aimed at helping them achieve their Individualized Education Plan goals and understand the content being taught. These skills included reading and vocabulary strategies, games, videos and using manipulatives in all content areas to reinforce the learning and promote recall and retention.
I have been a Math and Reading tutor for 6 years as a state educator in the After-School Tutoring Program as well as in the private sector off and on for almost 10 years with students ranging from second grade to 12th grade. I am knowledgeable about teaching methods that include active learning techniques like questioning, interactive activities, and peer teaching. Personalizing instruction to students' needs is crucial. I use visual aids extensively and create PowerPoints to enhance retention and recall of lessons. I also incorporate writing and reading activities in all my lessons. I also like to get feedback from students about the lessons to check for understanding and clear up misconceptions. These closing activities are no longer than 5-10 minutes and help check not only my delivery of the lesson, but also the students’ progress.
