I hold a Doctor of Philosophy degree in middle grades mathematic education from the University of Georgia, as well as Education Specialist (EdS), Masters in Education (MSc), and Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Business Education degrees at Georgia State University. My teaching certification content areas were 6-12 Mathematics; 6-12 Business Education; P-12 Educational Leadership; and 4-8 Mathematics, Social Studies, and Language Arts. I am currently retired, but I am working on bringing my teaching certificate back to an active status in these areas.
I have taught for over 30 years, of which 23 of those years were teaching mathematics to 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students in Dekalb County Schools, Georgia. I also taught in an adjunct capacity in the Secondary and Middle School Education Department at Kennesaw State University for 4 years. I believe in utilizing students' experiences to help to make concepts real, and to use visual cues, hands on, and a cooperative/collaborative approach as much as possible in the teaching/learning of mathematics.
As a math teacher, I am very aware that a one-on-one approach provides the best result for most students that need assistance in grasping concepts on their own. A slower pace, more practical examples and answers to their specific questions needed to fill the gaps in students' learning sequence helps them connect concepts in a meaningful way.
