Where to start. I am a self-employed Ghanaian-American, with a PhD in Sociology. Through my company, Culture Beyond Borders, I promote experiential learning through intercultural travel. My Bachelors degree was in (social) Psychology and my graduate degree focused on Sociology, statistics, and research methods. After 4 years in college, and a 7-years graduate degree, I began to notice, a lot of learning can and does take place outside the classroom. Most of my years in graduate school, I was a Teaching Assistant, and my office hours will be filled with students curious coming to discussions the topics we went over in class and much more.
After hours of study sessions, one-on-one tutoring/conversations, and generally advising and connecting to students, I realized, I enjoyed the teaching/learning experience a lot more outside the formal classroom structure. Students are more engaged when the learning experience connects with their cultural/personal interests. It is rare that students are just merely struggling with a subject or any particular class. More often, they are not connecting with the material! So now, when I'm spending my time promoting experiential learning through my company, I like to help students find that connection.
When I meet with a student, I like to find out who they are; what motivates/interests them. Then use that energy to apply it to the material. During the session we will go over the skills you need to master the topic, but I also I make sure we find a way for you to stay engaged in the learning experience.
